200740 Human Resource And Industrial Relations Strategy : Solution Essays

Question:

Case Study: A Caring Concern

You are the newly appointed Executive Director, Human Resources of a company providing in-home services to elderly people. You were recruited from a smaller competitor and must now get used to a larger and faster growing organisation in a growth industry. The population is ageing and the health sector cannot cope with a rising level of institutionalised older people. The government is concerned about the long-term cost of locating a high proportion of older people in the hospital sector and the concept of providing support to the elderly in their own homes is a popular and cost-effective alternative. This support includes a range of provisions during an illness, after an operation or, in any case, after a doctor and an independent assessor has recommended support because of frailty or long-term health conditions.

You believe strongly in the quality of care and in your first week on the job, you examine feedback from a recent survey of clients. You read a lot of positive comments

Task:

You quickly realise the gravity of the situation and the complete lack of effective HR management in the company both in the short-term and in the longer-term. You send an email to the CEO requesting an urgent meeting to outline your concerns. To make yourself clear, you include the following in the email:

  • an explanation of the importance of establishing systematic HR processes in line with the business strategy while maintaining quality and cost-effectiveness; and
  • an outline of your HR strategic plan for system enhancement, employee engagement and building a performance-focused culture for the long term sustainability of the company’s competitive advantage.

                             Subject: (Regarding calling an urgent meeting to address the business issues)

Respected Sir;

                       At the very beginning I want to show my heartfelt gratitude to you for selecting me as the new executive director of the caring home. I am both excited and glad to gain a position in your company which is engaged in serving the elder people and take care of their health related problems. Your company is one of the best in Australia and has a great reputation for serving the older people. After my appointment to the position I have personally visited all the centres of the company and have interacted with the older people who have been receiving service. I have collected some important feedbacks from them and have also interacted with the HR department of the company. I write this letter in order to draw your attention to some of the significant gaps that has been spotted by me in the company.

I would like to draw your immediate attention to the fact that;

            I have seen some of the major shortfalls in the current operating system of the business organization. At the very beginning it must be said that most of the employees who work as part time and full time are highly dissatisfied with the current system of the management. This includes the compensation policy, problems with communication, high rate of attrition and problems with the absence of a proper performance management policy. The existing problems needs a solid and permanent solution that can be helpful for the success of the business in the most efficient manner. I think it is important for us to invest strategically on caregiving and technological transformation. I request you to kindly bring in a strategic investor who can be able to invest in the business and make the old age care home one of the best in Australia. Bringing in new investors can help to improve the quality and also help to bring in a positive change in the wage structure of the business organization. I think a training program is highly necessary for all the employees serving in the company, as such a program can help develop the customer service of the business in the most appropriate manner. The absence of any proper systems generated feedback process has further degraded the process. It is important for the business to transform the total system immediately in order to ensure business success. The HR system of the business also needs significant changes that can help in the success of the business. I think it is highly important to establish systematic HR processing as because a proper HR processing can help to develop the communication and operations system of the organization and can also help to ensure employee satisfaction.

In view of the above mentioned issues I would like to request you to intervene in the matter and call an urgent meeting involving all the stakeholders. I request you to call the meeting as I will provide a detailed HR plan in the meeting as it will help to ensure the success of the business.

Thanking You;

Ana Williams, Executive Director, HR

ABC Old Age Services
