Anthropological Perspectives on Gender–Anthropologists and other social scientists distinguish distinguish biological “sex” –a complex biological phenomenon– from “gender” a cultural construct that associates certain characteristics, behaviors and roles with different gender categories as they are defined in a particular culture. Use 2 specific examples from the text readings (and that come from cultures different from your own),that demonstrate how specific cultures shape ideas about what different genders are like, how they should act,and how they should interact?  What does this tell you about whether gender differences are based on cultural learning/nurture versus biology/nature? 
Cultural Influences on Gender in Your Own Experience—Select one gender category that exists in a culture in which you were raised as a child. What name or names is the category given in this culture? Describe with some detail at least 2 ways that ideas about how this category should look, behave and interact were communicated to you (at any levels, family, peers, school, religious community, media, society in other ways). What message was conveyed and how was it conveyed? How do you think these ideas influence members of this gender category (including you, if you’d like to share but you don’t have to )? In your opinion, is there a difference between gender roles or expectations and gender-based inequality? (In other words, does different have to mean unequal?)  Why or why not? How might we distinguish between the two?
