Structure of an Argument

The course has been instrumental in my understanding of logic. It had always been difficult to exactly define logic without the use of an example before I started this course. The course was however exhaustive in determining what logic is and how we often exploit it. In the course of learning about logic, we learned about one very important aspect of logic which is an argument. Indeed, about arguments I had something completely different in mind when I came across it.

The structure of an argument was the most important thing I learned in this class. While we often use these concepts, I realized how often a poorly presented argument would eventually fail to deliver its validity. I also got to learn about the various parts of an argument and the importance of each one of them. Various statements often make an argument. One of these statements is known as the conclusion and is justified by the others which are known as premises.

Through this study, I learned that to improve the quality of my arguments, I would actually need to improve my premises so that they held more truth and pointed more to the conclusion. This way, I would be able to present more valid arguments to those around me. Along with this benefit, the course improved my ability to assess the arguments of others. Without such knowledge, it would be very easy for one to be swayed by bad arguments.

The possession of skills about arguments has also improved my ability to communicate more clearly and efficiently. Poor information is often presented to us from good sources. This is usually due to an inability for the person who is gathering the information from understanding it. With the skills obtained from this course, I will often be able to un-twist such material to much usable information.
