Family is the unit that makes an individual’s personality. The ways in which we are raised depends wholly on the teachings and conducts we are taught in the family units. The self-confidence, responsibilities, discipline along with many other elements possess a very strong bond with the family unit. Most of the psychological, behavioral and emotional problems that individual’s experiences and that require therapeutic sessions originate from the family setting (Barker & Chang, 2013). The instance families are unable to identify an issue facing one of their members or are unable to solve it then therapeutic treatment is obligatory. Involvement of family therapy helps find the origin of the problems being experienced by a patient after overcoming or finding a resolution towards them, the patient can be involved in other treatments.
The doctor had to start at the family since it forms the setting where his issues most probably initiated. The usage of family therapy in Stan’s treatment was useful since self-inequities he was having stemmed from his family; specifically from his dad (Dr. Corey, 2014). I think that if Stan’s father had given him more attention and appreciated his presence, Stan would not be in the state he is in currently.
The feminist and the Gestalt theories, least assisted in solving Stan’s issues. Firstly, the feminist theory is very imposing and irrelevant in this situation since it demands that Stan behaves in a manly manner without addressing the underlying issues; this implies some kind of a violent solution (Ivey, D’Andrea, & Ivey, 2012). Secondly, the Gestalt theory, dreams are not part of the present problems and I think that discussing dreams really helps Stan the least in dealing with the underlying historical and psychological issues
Using a therapy that I
disagree with implies that I will be uncomfortable, and will not serve my
patients to my maximum capacity. Thus, I would not bend my personal values
regarding serving my patients fully. I would chose to face the consequences of
continuing to use therapies that I know helps my patients recover fully.
