Cause and Effect

Cause and effect are inseparable from our day to day occurrences. The two can be used to explain almost any occurrence. The cause explains the how of an occurrence. It is the event that results in a second occurrence. The effect refers to the second event which results from the occurrence of the first. This paper seeks to analyze situations in which cause and effect arise.

In our day to day lives, we often find ourselves in the position of determining how one even causes another. We may for example associate drunkenness with accidents, gambling with losses and conflict in marriage to divorce. The list has no end. The human mind is programmed in such a way that it always tries to associate events. It is therefore always intent to identify the relationship of two situations.

When identifying such situations, the mind often makes mistakes. It identifies relationships between even things that have no relationship whatsoever. Or even when a relationship exists, it is only a distant relationship that does not imply causality. It is for this reason that we have superstitions. We want to associate death with the owl, or smoke with rain. The truth is that some of these situations are completely foreign to each other.

The cause and effect method of studying helps one to identify relationships between various situations and events in a book. There exist various words that may be used to alert an individual whenever a cause and effect situation arises. These include words like because, since, if, then and so. These words arise whenever a cause and effect situation arises. Being able to identify cause and effect situations helps to make understanding easier and more reasonable.
