Media Bias

Recently, a police officer was involved in an incident where he choked a culprit to death. This incident has experienced a lot of mass coverage. On December 3, 2014, the court failed to indict the police officer despite the situation of Garner;s death was declared a homicide. The different media houses have showed various aspects that have shown bias in one way or another.

According to Dianis (2014) of CNBC, there is need for the police system to be regulated further. The lack of regulations in the police has caused the prevalence of similar incidents. Furthermore, Dianis notes that npobody has been held responsible for the incident. Instead, everyone who should have been held responsible has continued with their responsibilities. This is, according to CNBC a failure on the part of the government. According to them, there should be more regulation in the police system to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents.

On the other hand, the article by Fox News holds that there is sufficient regulation in the police force (Vries, 2014). The media house instead looks at other aspects of the incident. It, for example, notes that there have been a variety of policies that have been created in the policies. This noted, hold that the police force should be left alone. They feel that the regulaytions that have been created in the recent times have been satisfactory enough for the police force. This is in agreement with the conservative belief that minimal government regulations sgould be enforced.

The article by Sanchez and Prokupecz (2014) of CNN highlights various issues on the case. There is lmited bias in this case. According to this case, while there may not be sufficient regulations in regard to police use of extreme force, there has been improvement in the regulation of police brutality. The article highlights another case known as the Brown case. According to the article, while the police had been previously sent to disperse the protestors, these were absent in the Garner case. This is an improvement is an important one in development.

BBC highlights police violence as a common issue in the U.S., especially when directed to black people (Bryant, 2014). It highlights a case of another incident that had led to the death of a black teenager in Ferguson, Missouri. However, the article also highlights the president’s reaction to the incident which shows a commitment by the government to react. To some extent, this mostly looks like a moderate stand.

One thing that stood up as a surprise in this analysis is the MSNBCs position on the incident in regard to what caused Garner’s death. According to MSNBC, the death was caused by more than a chokehold. This implies that the media house may as well be holding the liberal position that regulation is unnecessary as it did not cause the killing.

Super Pac ads are currently contributing to the majority of TV ads. These ads give an unfair advantage to the rich as they are able to contribute unlimited amounts of money for political campaigns. This is contrary to other groups that are only allowed to receive limited contributions from individuals.

Similarly, lobby groups need regulations. Lobby groups are often involved in promoting activities that would otherwise be regarded as illegal. Their lobbying requires support from those politicians they support (Bardes, Shelley & Schmidt, 2013). Eventually, citizens get short changed on both accounts. First, they get products that are of substandard quality. Second, these groups support political parties and individuals who are unfit for office.
