◦ Describe effective methods you used in identifying and narrowing down to just one of the topics to further research for your Final Paper.
The method I used to identify my topic was by using research to identify the areas that I am interested in. The areas that interest me is environmental. I research the Global Water Shortage and Global Climate Change. These two topics have many published resources to use for topic selection. I found that there is more scholarly research for the global climate change subject. It also helped me narrow it down to man-made effect that influence global warming. The Global Climate Change is more widely researched or explain as Global Warming. It also has seemed to be further focused on Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission as well this maybe even more focused subject within global warming to help develop my thesis question and statement.
◦ Explain three ways you can critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly.
You can use the CRAAP Test to evaluate or critically analyze sources to determine if they are scholarly and appropriate for college research. In the education video “Evaluating Sources” by Ashford University (2016) the explain the CRAAP test breaking it down as Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy and Purpose. The three out of these five you can use is currency, authority and accuracy. Currency identifies at what time this source was published. Websites are a good example looking at the currency lets you know the last time the information was evaluated. Authority also help you analyze if the authority of the source has the knowledge base to speak on the subject. A blog could be an example of checking the authority. Accuracy is another way to review a source. A scholarly is reviewed by peers and professional on that subject and identified as truthful and accurate.
◦ Summarize information from at least two scholarly journal articles from the Ashford University Library that will support your claims for your chosen topic. Explain why scholarly sources should be used to support your writing on the selected topic.
The first Article I chose was “Effect of automobiles on global warming: A modeling study” by Shyam Sundar, Ashish Kumar Mishra and Ram Naresh (2017) where they evaluate how “increasing demand and excessive use of automobiles have increased the level of carbon dioxide emission in the environment, providing a significant contribution to increase the global warming.” They deep dive into the effect of CO2 emissions of automobiles through mathematical equation that evaluates “density of human population, density of automobiles and the concentration of carbon dioxide” (Sundar, 2017). It also gives an assessment of stabilization of emission through this analysis which gives a reverse argument to consider. This is important because I can see this as an area of focus under the effects of a man-made devices and what action may be taken in my research paper. The second “Sensitivity of Global Warming to Carbon Emissions: Effects of Heat and Carbon Uptake in a Suite of Earth System Models” by Richard Williams, Vassil Roussenov, Phillip Goodwin, Laure Resplandy, and Laurent Bopp (2017) about the “simple emergent relationship for our future climate: surface warming in- creases nearly linearly with the cumulative CO2 emitted since the preindustrial age.” This article would help my research by understanding the effects and causes of the earth’s surfaces reaction to fossil fuel CO2 emissions.
