Taking specifically about the lighting techniques in the neo noir movie The Godfather released in the year 1972, the scene where the Mafia leader, Don Vito Corleone was introduced sitting in the study room in his house along with his consigliore, or adviser, Tom Hagen, the low-key fill light or the chiaroscuro lighting technique is being used. Don Vito Corleone is a very powerful character which could be understood by the fact that people were making line in front of his house in order to get their wish granted on the occasion of his daughter`s wedding. Corleone was so powerful that he could fulfill the wishes. However, it could said that it is not just the dialogues of Corleone which helps in depicting the power and the gravitas but the low key fill light or the chiaroscuro lighting technique played a significant role. The low-key fill lights highlights the contours of the Corleone, which make him more powerful and makes the viewers realize that he is a leader, who is dangerous but wise.

The Low-key fill light or the chiaroscuro lighting helps in setting up the dark somber tone of The Godfather movie. From the opening scenes itself the viewers realized that they are up for some serious stuff. The whole lightning setup, the color combinations of the set with costumes and the rich hue gives the Godfather a different feel.

The sense of mystery along with a creation of a dramatic mood in the whole the godfather movie is done with the help of the low-key fill light or the chiaroscuro lighting, which thereby enhance the overall brooding intense and somber tone in the movie (Landau, 2014).

If High key fill light were used in place of the low-key fill light, the intensity of the whole scene and the overall tone of the movie would be reduced. The powerfulness and the overall impact of the central character would be reduced largely due to the different lighting technique.
