1) What are the core values enunciated in the Declaration of the Rights of Man? Can you identify passages where the philosophes’ influence is obvious? (identify the philosophe).

2) Describe Mary Wollstonecraft’s response to the Declaration of Rights of Man in her essay “A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792) . What did she argue, and why? 

3) In his speech “On the revolutionary government” Maximilien Robespierre argues that a state facing an existential crisis has the right and even the duty to temporarily disregard the rule of law in the name of the public good. He suggests that a state of emergency justifies the suspension of civil liberties. Do you agree? Could it be justified to restrict personal freedom in time of war or natural disaster?
