 One of the key themes that Postcolonial theorists highlight in The Tempest is the tension in the power relationships among the visitors and inhabitants of the island. Readers tend to view Prospero as power-hungry ruler pulling the strings on all aspects of the island. However, in the end, readers see a far more benevolent leader capable of mercy. Since the island was uninhabited under Caliban’s ‘rule,’ we can only guess what kind of overseer he may have been. We can also theorize what Prospero’s rule might have been like in Milan prior to his exile, or what kind of king Alonso is in Naples.
