Grade Level: 4th Grade

Topic: Volume and Rectangular Prisms

Objectives and Alignment to Standards (NCTM, Common Core, and State) -3pts

Students should be able to identify shapes and work out volumes of the rectangular prisms using V=L*B*H or V= Base Area*Height

Students to be able to define the volume and know the unit for measuring volumes.

Students should be able to find the area of a right angled triangles, other types of triangles, quadrilateral objects and models, and polygons by creating rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply the learnt techniques in solving real-world and other mathematical problems.

Modelling Rectangular Prisms worksheet

Base-ten block cubes

Document projector

Shape cuts from construction papers.

Procedures

Engage-3pts

  • Show your students a handful of base ten cubes and inquire from your students the kind of container that can be filled using the base ten cubes without leaving a space. Allow them to discuss and tell to one another the answer.
  • Allow your students to share their ideas with the entire class
  • Show up your class a projected image of the base ten cubes and describe its features using the labels such as Length (side to side), Base (depth, front to back) and Height (how tall it is from to bottom).

Explore-3pts

  • Inform your students that they will construct and build a real model of a rectangular prism using the cube units and shapes from the construction paper.
  • Demonstrate to the class how a ten cube volume unit rectangular prism is constructed using the unit cubes
  • Also show your class how the SI unit of Volume is written for example for a one-unit cube, the volume will be u3
  • Finally have your class build a model of a 36u3. Note that to build this, the unit cubes are counted on the Length (6 units), Base (6 Units) and Height (6units).

V= L*B*H;

V=6units*6units*6units = 36u3

Explain-3pts

  • Explain to your students what constitutes Volume (The space taken up by matter)
  • Finally, explain to your students that the Volume of the base ten cube is calculated by Multiplying length (l)*base*height(h)
  • Illustrate using symbols the denotations of Volume, for instance, V= L*B*H or V=BA*H

Elaborate -3pts

  • After the exercise, hand out to the class the model of a rectangular prism and preview it with your students.
  • Involve your students in working together with an example with your students.
  •  Explain and elaborate any questions the class may be having concerning the exercise. Be keen to follow up with the students if they understand the concerns of their colleagues.

Evaluate -3pts

  • Each student has finally made a model of the rectangular prism and already knows how to calculate the volume of the rectangular prism.
  • Give the students some support with further illustrations of their models and take into consideration any different views a student has.
  • Also, show your students different rectangular prisms models and randomly ask your class to tell you the volumes and briefly explain how they arrived at their answers.
