The book The Hunger Games, is about a society similar to ours. The poor live in horrible conditions while the rich control everything. The people take pleasure in watching teens compete in a death match. The story focuses on the character of Katniss Everdeen, from district twelve who volunteers to compete in “the games” in order to protect her younger sister. We also follow the story of Peeta Mellark who is the boy tribute for district twelve. Katniss is a very skilled archer which gives her an upper hand in “the games”. In the first games Katniss is “hunted down” by the rich kids but she manages to win using berries. She also saves Peeta. Next the author brings a new approach to the games instead of teens it is now older people as well. Katniss learns how to work with people as a team and make alliances. Katniss joins the rebel alliance, which is basically a group of other people trying to change the way their society functions. She joins the alliance because she wants to change the world.
Katniss Everdeen is the Protagonist in the story The Hunger Games, she is willing to give up her life to stand for what she believes in. Katniss shows qualities of a true and noble person. She reminds me of what Jesus di on the cross for us. Katniss does not feel it is right for people to be placed in a class and have no way out and have all their decisions made for them. Katniss is from district twelve and she is very poor she volunteers as tribute for the games to protect her sister from it. In this story Katniss must weigh the feelings of survival and love. To me I see Katniss as someone who is not afraid to speak out when they feel something is wrong. She is willing to lay down her life for people she doesn’t even know. She is a skilled archer which gives her a chance to excel in the games. She is also very smart which gives her an upper hand as well. Katniss is a very dynamic character, she started off not knowing much about how bad things needed to changed she didn’t see a need for change. But when she joins the rebel alliance she knows what she is standing for. If I were to compare Katniss to someone in today’s society it would be Breanna Holbert. Breanna Holbert is the National FFA president. She has so many things opposing her the fact that she is black and a woman makes people think less of her in a working society, but she overcomes those people and their thoughts. Just like Katniss does, she won’t stand for the rich society making all her decisions and choosing her life.
Peeta Mellark is another protagonist in The Hunger Games he is chosen as the male tribute for district twelve. Before they were chosen Katniss and peeta had only interacted once at age 11 when Peeta burned bread so that Katniss could eat. Peeta has a “crush” on Katniss. Peeta almost died for Katniss. She was in a fight and Peeta came and told her to run so she did and she found him days later almost dead. Peeta and Katniss decide to form an alliance because there can be two winner if they are from the same district. Then the rules were changed and they only allowed one winner. Peeta suggests that Katniss just kill him so she can go home with her family. Katniss then suggests they eat the Nightlock berries to commit suicide. Then as they are doing it they are told to stop and they are crowned the winners. Peeta is willing to die for Katniss. He truly loves her but realizes that she staged her love for him. Peeta reminds me of someone who is truly sacrificial. He reminds me of a service man/woman that sacrifices their peace and happiness to save their country. He gave up his pesce for Katniss when he took a beating for her so she would not starve to death.
‘When I was younger, I scared my mother to death, the things I would blurt out about District 12, about the people who rule our country, Panem, from the far-off city called the Capitol. Eventually I understood this would only lead us to more trouble. So I learned to hold my tongue and to turn my features into an indifferent mask so that no one could ever read my thoughts.’
This quote explains some of Katniss’s characteristics that are key to understanding her journey. It first started with her saying things about the problems with their society and not realizing what she was saying. However she realizes throughout the story about the social injustices.
I would personally recommend this book to people everywhere. The book shows how to build skills but how to take charge while doing it. People in America need to know how to do this because the way people want to go about change in our society nowadays is not ok and it is not healthy and it is not a good look for our country. We are blessed with the opportunity to change things. Katniss had to fight to change things and she let no one stand in her way. I recommend this book to everyone because it teaches strong principles and good life skills
