Purpose
You have been working on your research project for a few weeks now. You began with a tentative thesis sentence on a chosen research topic, and then you conducted research on that topic and created an annotated bibliography of the sources you found. Now, it is time to refine your thesis sentence for your research project. Taking time to review what your research says and using that information to refine your thesis will provide you with a strong and focused thesis sentence for your research project.
Directions
· Refer back to your tentative thesis sentence; think about the information you found while conducting your research on your research topic; then, revise your thesis sentence so it reflects your research. Make sure you thesis sentence includes the topic of your research, your claim about that topic, and a list of the main ideas you will use to support/prove that claim. For example:

· My Tentative Thesis: 
Children in the 1800s developed biases for cultural, social and religious differences as they read or were exposed to literature adults read that had been written during that era. 

(NOTE: After researching my tentative thesis, I discovered that my original ideas were very general and my researching efforts produced too many resources, so I narrowed my research to focus on the cultural, social and religious differences within the Appalachian people.)

New Thesis Ideas Based on Research: 
Topic: Literature written about how religious cults impacted Appalachia people during the 1800s Claim: Child readers were influenced since they often read or were exposed to what adults read Main Ideas: Religious cults created disturbing customs, cultural beliefs and social behaviors in Appalachian communities 

Revised Thesis Example: 
In the 1800s, young readers became skeptical of Appalachian people after reading about disturbing customs, cultural beliefs, and social behaviors that religious cults created by capitalizing on uneducated and culturally backward mentalities.
