Discussion Board

n Course Documents you will see a TED talk on hemp and the sustainable future.  Please watch this and read the WSJ hemp  link(s) that I sent you.  Find and read at least two other publications (articles, books, video material) to learn more about the topic. These can be short articles or segments of published material. But, if you want, use the WSJ links on hemp that I previously posted for you to prepare. Use the sources to practice citation with the APA format:

Here is the checklist that I will use for feedback. If you see —for example— a C in the comments section of the DB, that means that you did not follow C in the list below.
A- The Discussion Boards are for applying what you are learning to analyze a recent situation, not for opinions. Avoid stating: “in my opinion” or “in my view…” Just state facts and, when possible, support them with figures.
B- Spelling or grammar mistakes: use spelling and grammar software before you post.
C- Avoid expressions like “a lot” or “huge.” Use figures instead.
D- Paraphrase or quote. Credit your sources using the APA style:

Do not cut and paste from readings. That is plagiarism, which is illegal.
E- Use the same font and size in all postings lest your work looks choppy.
F- Don’t state that you agree or disagree with a student unless you add a sentence explaining why.

A-Remember that the purpose of discussion boards in this class is for you to:
1-practice professional writing (Express yourself in complete, grammatically correct sentences written in a coherent manner).
2-apply what you are learning in the class to a real-life situation (a Wall Street Journal [WSJ] article)
3-practice research and citation (find an additional article, book or publication and source it with the APA format:

What utilization of hemp is more likely to spearhead the industry in the US? Seeds, hemp Crete, oil, textile…? Why?
The utilization of hemp is more likely going to create environmentally safer and better housing, containers and bags, and textiles. According to the presentation made by Amy Ansel, hemp is very durable, strong, and can be used in many different applications. Since hemp is a naturally grown plant, it is easily biodegradable and can be used create new technologies to replace plastic in the housing, textiles, and agricultural industries.
According to (Maltais, K., Wall Street Journal, [9 October 2019]) hemp was, “historically grown to make industrial rope, fabric and paper.” Hemp is an excellent and innovative method to spearhead those industries because according to Ms. Ansel, it grows fast like weeds. It can be produced on a larger production scale four (4x) a year. It can grow on only one (1) acre of land and only needs about ten (10) percentage of water that the amount of water that cotton uses to create clothes, which is cost efficient and very profitable.
In terms of housing, inside of hemp’s stalk is a material called “hurd”. With hurd, it can be mixed with other environmentally eco friendly materials to create “Hemp Crete” which can be used to build houses on an industrial level. Hemp hurd can absorb carbon dioxide, can soak up oil spills and can absorb four (4x) its weight. According to Ms. Ansel, there is a 1500 year old bridge in France made out of hemp.
Lastly, according to Ms. Ansel, “the U.N. is calling for sustainable commodities, communities and new technologies by 2030. The United Kingdom plans on banning plastics by the end of this year, and France by 2020.” Additionally, hemp is considered cannabis and was made illegal in the Marijuana Tax Act in 1937. However, according to (Trentmann, N., Wall Street Journal [22 September 2019]), “hemp was legalized in the U.S. in 2018 when it was included in the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, which allowed the growing of hemp and opened up the market for hemp-products such as creams, lotions and other cosmetic items.” I feel that hemp would be the best option for a clean-green sustainable future as hemp seems to be cleaner, stronger, and safer for all agricultural, textiles, cosmetics, and seed industries alike.
