Comparing and Contrasting the APN Population Foci in Florida

In Florida, the population growth is more than the recruitment of nurses. The six population foci include family/individual across the lifespan, neonatal, women’s health/gender-related, adult-gerontology, pediatrics and psych/mental health. Neonatal nurse practitioners provide health care for infants, neonates and children up to 2 years of age. The NNP obtains a thorough health history that includes antepartum, intrapartum, maternal medical and newborn history.

In acute care pediatric nurse practitioner is prepared to give care to children with critical, chronic and complex acute illness across the whole pediatric age spectrum. This program implements the full scope of the role diagnosis, assessment and management by use of interventions of families and patients. This program always considers a child and family developmental level as it translates health information in supporting positive health outcomes. The primary care pediatric nurse practitioner provides children with care from birth to adulthood. This care is differential from acute care pediatric in that it has an in depth experience and knowledge in pediatric primary health care including management/prevention and child care of common pediatric chronic conditions and acute illnesses.  

Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner provides primary mental health care to clients seeking this type of service and involves relationship-based, comprehensive and continuous services that are necessary for prevention, promotion of optimal mental health and treatment of psychiatric disorders. On the contrary with others, the women’s health nurse practitioner gives primary health care to all women and emphasizes on only the conditions that are unique to women. The nurse practitioner of women health considers the inter-relationship of social class, gender, economic powers, sexual orientation, ethnicity and socio-political power differentials. All the population foci initiate therapeutic interventions according to established care standards. They all have to develop a comprehensive database that includes diagnostic test, pertinent test and physical assessments.
