The Hero’s journey.

The various stages of a hero’s journey remain constant and recurrent in most of the hero stories as defined by Joseph Campbell (1949) (Campbell). He summarized the Hero’s Journey systematically. The first step in this journey is the society in which the hero originally belongs. Then follows the stage at which the Hero realizes that there is something that needs their attention or they encounter a challenge to that effect. Most heroes are usually reluctant to take up the challenges citing personal inadequacies. It follows that the heroes meet individuals along the way to prepare them for the challenge they face. They then set out on the journey for solutions to the problem. They begin by moving away from their comfort zone and taking on the challenge. Away from the comfort zone, there are drawbacks which mark the sixth stage of the journey. The hero is required to design and apply tactics that could solve the challenge. At this stage, situations get hard for the heroes to a point where they struggle to live to see another day. As a result of persevering the adversities, their efforts pay off. After dealing with the challenges they integrate with the community to which they originally belonged. The hero has to apply all the knowledge acquired in order to claim the ultimate success before they can finally relish at their success which marks the final stage of a Hero’s Journey according to Campbell. (Ray)

In the Parable of the Sower by Butler, Lauren is the Hero She finds her current society broken and non-progressive and takes it upon herself to change her future. Lauren is brave enough to dare to leave the walled community in pursuit for freedom as opposed to enjoying the safety of the walls (Butler). She finds it fulfilling to work for a better future in the face of danger as opposed to an uncertain future within the walls of her community. At the end of the novel, Lauren succeeds in creating a fresh society and leaves behind what her father deemed as the perfect society.
