1. What Your Closet Reveals about You

Tan refers to the id, ego, and superego in her essay. These three elements of personality, according to Sigmund Freud, work together to create each person’s individual complex behavior. The id is generally considered to be the pleasure principle, the part of the brain that wants instant gratification. Babies rely on the id to get their needs—food, diaper changes, sleep—immediately met. The ego is the part of the personality that is responsible for reality; it tries to meet the needs of the id, but always takes into account social appropriateness. The superego is the part of the personality that holds our morals, standards, and guidelines for making good judgments. Using Tan’s essay as a guide, analyze your closet and determine what you have in there that represents your id, ego, and superego.
