Data collection is an important feature in development of any kind. Data is what determines whether a project is feasible or not. Basically the information that is extracted from the data is what sets the basis for the project. As a result, the accuracy of the data collected is of utmost importance. It is important for an individual to take time and design the best possible methods of collecting data. The methods must be convenient for the respondents and effective for the data collector.
The first most important part of any data collection method is setting out the objectives. This has to be done carefully and narrowed down to the specific information that the study seeks to address. In drawing out the objactives of a study, the project proposed must have adequate information on the target, funding and the expected outcome once implemented. Once this information is clear, then setting the objectives of the study becomes simpler. The most important part of data collection is the method. There are three major methods of collecting data, one of which the interview schedules. Interview schedules are the most common and effective when used appropriately. However, interview schedules have several downsides, for instance, they are time consuming and prone to bias in the cases where the interviewer is likely to be affected by the project once implemented. From a neutral perspective, the results from an interview schedule have a high chance of giving inadequate results. The other method is the Joint Application design which is a system created to collect and analyze data without wasting much of the respondents’ time. This method works with the selected respondents being in the same place at the same time and taking part in the study. The third method is questionnaires. This is effective and accurate when applied expertly. The amount of time that an individual take in filling out a questionnaire is relatively less than when taking part in an interview or Joint Application Design (Kendall & Kendall, 2011). Questionnaires give the individual time to finish their work before filling out the responses.
When collecting data, the respondents must be made comfortable enough to give honest and relevant responses. It is important that the researcher designs the objectives with skill. It is also important for the respondents to be made aware that they are participating in a survey. Collecting information without consulting the individual is not right and in order to avoid legal problems for the project should it go on to be implemented, the respondents have to be made aware of the process. Organized data collection methods are effective no matter what form they take. An organized data collection method is not only about the objectives being precise but also the process of achieving the objectives. The process includes reaching out to the respondents and studying the quality of the responses they are likely to give and how relevant the data collected might be to the project in question. Data collection as part of project development is important and involving the persons being affected by the project is key to the success or failure of the project.
In summary, the collection of data has to be systematic and as broad as possible in order to generate the right quality of information once processed. Most data collection methods are flawed but with constant research, better forms of data collection can be designed. Organized collection of data ensures that the information collected is accurate and relevant to the project.
