ME IN MIDDLE AGE

Me in Middle Age

I value my youth. The idea of hitting middle age is not only scary, it is also tormenting. A myriad of changes are always on the horizon and these changes slow one down and drag them backwards. It is these changes that every young person dreads but unfortunately the best one can do is prepare for the change otherwise it is unstoppable. The change will affect our physical being, economic functionality, and social life among many other aspects of daily living.

Age shows its ugly face for the first time by laying a well-coordinated ambush on our physical characteristics. By the time we hit middle age, the effects of the assault are evident. On a personal level, I expect the attack to be efficient on my vision, skin, hair and internal organs and on my general physical capabilities. I foresee a situation where I will be a regular to my opticians as well as to my dentist. Using my beloved iPad and other electronic gadgets will be much strenuous not forgetting the struggle i will be having in the shopping mall trying to read product descriptions and price tags. My teeth will agonize as they crush nuts, they will shake and the dentist will fill them as well as issue me with dentures as time goes by. Wrinkles accompanied by falling hair will be the biggest sellout. Being active on the physical world will be something that will not be as swift as it used to be. I expect the body to simply start resisting and dragging. I will not be thrilled when i remember my bicycle. It will be a task to move it around. 

At middle age, the value of health insurance increases exponentially. The majority of my major organs that have been working nonstop since I breathed for the first time will be showing signs of fatigue. I expect small things to be magnified. Small things like allergies, sprains and reaction to cold. It is at this time that the doctor’s advice regarding Pap smear, prostate cancer tests and manner of tests will make sense. The mistakes of my youthful life will surface. My bones that were broken when I was young will remind me of those painful experiences. All the hard partying and the cold I endured during my campus years will resurface on the other end. I will be feeling the brunt of my pad5 choices every time I visit the doctor’s office. Oh, am headed there at a speed I cannot control. 

At my middle age, I will maintain a low profile as long as my personality is concerned. I will be concerned with only the necessary stuff. I will keep necessary contacts and friends as well as attend meetings and functions that make sense to me. My personality will not be about trying to fit into a group, it will be about meeting my goals and defining my purpose. I will be very attentive to my hobbies, they are the things that will make my life interesting. They will have more meaning than before. I will enjoy watching football more especially with the knowledge that I will not have the chance to play it. 

During my middle age, I will value my employment and other income generating activities more than before. My mortgage will be at its prime and my kids will be in deep in their academic endeavors. Making a mess out of my career will be the most critical error. I will be seeking more recognition through promotions and job satisfaction. Through my job I will be meeting my civic duties as I will be working to make my country and community better. At this time, the political arena will be more interesting and the need to make a change will be at its highest. When out of the work and when not watching football, I will be doing charity work through various community based organizations in my neighborhood. 

My family will come first. I fully understand that at this period, many divorces occur but I sincerely hope I will not be among the statistics. I hope I will still bring another life to the planet. I expect, out of experience, that I will be in a position to hold my family together and live in accordance to my wishes as well as my input. When the time to call it off comes, I hope I will retire in peace. It is at this time that I will be in a great shape to fully give back to the society through charity work especially dealing with the poor, sick and homeless. I also hope to visit some countries and savor what they have as well as what they do differently. Most of these countries might be in Africa and I hope that my spouse will join my bandwagon. Middle age is coming, hope I will be glad in it.
