Impact of Post 9/11

The 9/11 attack in the United States shook the world. The United States being a country considered to be well advanced in security matters. The attack on the United States was certainly a game changer to the world’s perspective on a lot of social issues. This is evident in the event where people’s eyes were opened to the fact that technology making the world a global village does not change the fact that people are different (May, 2016). The incident was a terrorist attack which had all the nations in the world re-valuate the security regulations at all entry and exit points into their countries. More so, the airports had to be fitted with new security feature to prevent future incidences like the 9/11. The United States was the most central part of the world that the terrorists could target. This means that the attack on the United States was a message to the world that terrorists cannot be inhibited and no country is safe enough. However, following this attack, the United States has continually been profiling the citizens of the countries in the Arab nations. The 9/11 attack can, therefore, be credited with heightening racial profiling of people based on their countries of origin. At the moment, Muslims in the United States are usually regarded as terrorists or terrorist sympathisers.

The immediate impact of the 9/11 attack fuelled the recession that was already in progress in 2001. The 9/11 attack was a way for terrorists to destroy the American economy which would result in the world’s economy being further crippled. After the attack, the stock market was closed for four days, this was a big deal since it had never been closed before since 1933 during the time of President Franklin Roosevelt, who closed the markets during the great depression (Amadeo, 2017). The terrorists achieved their goal of denting the economy of the United States. The target of the terrorists would have had more fatal results if they achieved it fully, the planned attacked to White House was not successful. This would have made the situation in the world economy worse than it was during that time. The attack on the three centres of power in the United States would have made the economy and the society crumble in all its entirety. The economy of the United States further was affected because the government had a new undertaking to fund from the country’s budget. This is the economy having to fund the war against terror.

The 9/11 was momentarily a moment where the United States had a chance of being a role model to dealing with terrorist attacks. The United States would have been a world leader in promoting peace if they had taken measures to secure their borders rather than launching attacks in the places where the terrorists were believed to have been residing (Jenkins, Powell, Hanif, Galloway, & Ross, 2011). This is where the United States profiled all Muslim states as being sympathisers or terrorists, further fuelling animosity that was previously not there. The 9/11 spread the narrative of discrimination and hostility between the United States and other countries that seemed aligned to the Eastern civilization. As a terrorist, Osama bin Laden had achieved his mission of creating chaos in the world and instilling fear in the society. The attack on the United States was remarkably the only incident where the Al Qaeda was able to cause such a magnitude of destruction seeing that since then, there is no other attack that has been credited to the. The 9/11 attack has since made the United States look like villains and also highlighted her failure to promote peace in the Arab countries.

To conclude, the United States went through the most changes after the 9/11 attack. There were many cases of mental health issues suffered by the survivors and their relatives, the economic destabilization increased the cases of unemployment and slow growth of the American economy. The United States was also a victim of being isolated by the world following the type of action they took in responding to the attacks (Writer, 2017). The response led to loss of innocent lives in the Arab countries as well as destruction of property and stability of governments. The war on terror by the United States further caused a division among the American people. The American people are divided into the people who support the styles of fighting terror and those who are against it. This is a sad situation for American because, after the attack, solidarity and togetherness should have been given the importance it deserves. The 9/11 attack has left America in a state where she has to fight against all odds to remain superior. This further makes the Arab countries feel at ease about the attack given the treatment America accords them. The United States was not keen on ensuring that after the war, they worked on the root cause of the terrorists attack on America. This means that America acted defensively instead of acknowledging her mistakes and making it right where they could. This resulted in the United States creating animosity that did not previously exist.
