Truly, effectiveness of care delivery in a diverse culture is promoted by communication skills. Communication is the heart of care delivery in health system. According to Lawton and Carroll (2005), communication skills in nursing boosts interpersonal relationship between a patient and a health professional. Nonetheless, communication barrier may occur due to cultural differences between the patient and the health professionals. As you have highlighted, the issue can be rectified by tailoring care to a patient’s specific beliefs, behavior and culture. What a captivating discussion you have provided? It is true that as nurses we have a responsibility to provide culturally appropriate care particularly in a culturally diverse region. Delivering culturally competent care is essential and nurses require to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the patient (Andrews and Boyle, 2015). However, many are the times that nurses are faced with time limitation and may lack time to explore on the cultural background of a patient. Personally, I have cared for diverse patients and at times it is hard to identify the culture of an individual by a look or talking to them. Nonetheless, I believe applying nursing intervention that are patient centered will boost care to the patient irrespective of their cultural background. What so far is your challenging encounter with culturally diverse issue?
