Hello class, I will discuss on some of the reason why gerontological nursing remains an undeserved field in nursing care. Gerontological nursing is a nursing speciality that pertains to older adult where nurses collaborate with the older patients, their families and the community in general. The gerontological is responsible in supporting healthy aging, quality of life and maximum functioning. A study conducted by Neville, Dickie and Goetz (2013) identifies that nursing student do not envy working with the old population due to the poor working environments, physically demanding, negative stereotypes, time constraints, and lack of confidence with older population. The study is an indication of the negative attitudes of nurses towards gerontological nursing. Other nurses feel gerontological care is not interesting, lacks prestige, heavy workload and too many organizational rules.
The negative attitude of nursing students towards gerontological care requires the use of innovative teaching and learning strategies. According to (Parsons et al., 2015), it is essential to increase attitudes and interest in caring for older patients their first year in nursing. One strategy that the nursing curriculum should include is the inclusion of gerontological nursing content in university baccalaureate programs. However, this may be challenging where there lacks faculty interest and expertise or competing interests in nursing.
There is a relationship between A Profile of Older Americans: 2016 and the ANA Standards and Scope of Practice Nursing. A Profile of Older Americans: 2016 provides information on all the neds of American older population and how they desire health professionals to deliver care. On the other hand, the ANA Standards and Scope of Practice Nursing is a manual that illustrates who should do what concepts of nursing and the protocols to follow to take care of gerontological nursing. The two aspects are related the Profile of Older Americans: 2016, assists the ANA to formulate standards as well as the scope of practice.
