Roman Medieval Society

Pompeii is a historic site known for two reasons: Mt Vesuvius buries it in ashes as a result of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the accounts of its excavation. These aspects are significant parts of the historical discourse of the town (Scott, 2017). The first discovery of Pompeii was at a time when archeology was still at its infant stage. The only way to find out the historical accounts of what happened was to rely on religion.  The culture of those discovered provides some insights into how the habitats carried on with their life. The structural changes in archaeological methods as well as social ethos also changed the interpretations of the site. As a result of the discovery of the city, it created a cognitive landscape as well as the hidden meaning (Scott, 2017). Over the years, the Venusian town has become a center of interest or artists and has also captured the imagination as a path into the ancient world. In exploring the concept of cognitive history, the site of Pompeii has shed light on man’s innate lot in death. 

The history surrounding Pompeii is mostly about its demise. It was until 1595 when they found artifacts from Pompeii. Following the discovery, there were centuries of looting (Tannous, 2018). When the archaeological excavations began in 1595, brought forth the revelation of how the people live and how they met their death in 79 AD (Tannous, 2018). While the eruption of Mount Vesuvius was the cause of the city’s downfall, people are still curious about the exact happening of the event. The archaeological intervention helped to reveal many aspects that have allowed us to look back to ancient life.
