Phoneme Blending

Phoneme blending was graded out of 8 and thus the pass mark 4/8. The entire class surpassed the pass mark, which was an indication of reasonable strength in the area. Twelve students scored 8/8, and several scored 6/8 and above. Twenty students scored above 75%.

Rhyme

The rhythm was graded out of 8 too. Twenty-two students attained the pass mark of 4/8 while three scored below 50%. However, the performance was an indication of some strength but was not as good as in phoneme blending. Several students were on the pass mark of 4, which was a risky position. Generally, rhyming was an area of strength for the class. Fifteen students scored 75% and above.

Phoneme segmentation

Phoneme segmentation totalled eight and five students scored below the pass mark of 4/8. Seventeen students scored 75% and above while twenty attained the pass mark. Two students scored 1/8 while four students scored below 25%. In general, the students above average, but some students might require some special concern moving forward.

Letter identification: Upper Case

Letter identification was marked out of 26 with a pass mark of 13/26. The entire class scored above 84% with more than half of the class scoring 100%. The least score was 22/26, and only two students scored that. The students showed significant strength in identifying upper case letters.

Letter identification: Lower Case

Identification of lower case letters was evaluated out of 26, too, and nineteen students scored 100%. The entire class scored 80% and above. The least score attained was 21/26. Identifying lower case letters was another area of strength.

Letter sounds

The letter sounds were evaluated out of 26. Fourteen students scored 100%, while the least score was 16/26. Twenty four students scored 88% and above.

Reading score

48% of the students exceeded expectations in reading, while 20% met expectations in the same area. 28% approached expectation but needed short term intervention to improve their skills. 4% of the class, which represented a single student who did not meet expectations and thus would need intensive intervention.  In general, 76% of the students were above average.

Writing score

In writing, only two students, which represent 8%, scored the highest points while 16% of them scored the least. In general, only 44% of the class passed the average mark in writing. 

From the analysis, students indicated significant strength in Letter identification upper case and letter identification lower case. On the other hand, their performance in identifying rhyming words and in writing skills seemed not satisfactory since they are in grade 1.
