Although Aksionov’s wife reaction is considered as an injustice, it can also be termed as
a superstition. She had a nightmare about her husband and warned him about it, and the
unfolding of events show that indeed something bad happened to Aksionov. She was worried
about him and asked him to be careful. The events that happened to Aksionov may have been
avoided if he had listened to his wife and instead postponed the trip.

It can be agreed that discrimination existed in the society depending on the status of a
person. The rich and the poor could easily be identified from how they dressed and how they
were treated at occasions. The people that were considered to be rich were introduced to almost
everyone at the party. It is also important to note that discrimination was also practiced by the
children as seen when one child thumped the governess’ son, forcing him to abandon playing
with other kids.

The appearance of Aksionov can be described in two ways. When he was a young man,
he was fair-haired, curly-headed, and handsome. In his youth, he was also full of fun and loved
singing. After his sentence, however, he grew old and developed a long grey beard, and his hair
turned white. He also stooped and walked slowly and was no longer full of fun.

“The Christmas Tree and the Wedding, by Fyodor Dostoevsky
It is also right to say that Christmas, as depicted in the story, does not fall in line with the
traditional Christmas practices. Christmas is usually about families spending time together and
being happy. Most of the adults present at the party were more concerned about their status in the
society and what they would gain from being present at the occasion. The wedding may also
have been a standard practice in the society at that time, and husbands were chosen for the
daughters. It can be agreed that parents did not bother about the happiness of their children but
for the amount of dowry that they would obtain from their husbands.
