Concept Analysis of Environment

Purpose of the Concept Analysis

The purpose of the concept analysis is to improve the understanding of environment in nursing. The analysis states all the definitions and uses and environment, define the significant attributes, develop a model case, borderline case, and contrary case. The concept analysis also focuses on the illegitimate and invented cases, establishing consequences and antecedents, and creating an empirical reference that is important in explaining the concept.

Uses of Environment Concept

The specific and general definitions are utilized to understand information about environment. The term is defined from a philosophical perspective, dictionaries, and theoretical perspective. The use of the concept is presented for nursing and social science concept.

Definition of Environment

Dictionaries

Based on Merriam-Webster dictionary, the word environment is defined as the objects, circumstances, or conditions surrounding a person, or an object. Another definition is a complex of chemical, physical, and biotic elements such as soil, climate, and living things. These elements are important to an organism or its ecological society and determine the survival and form of all living things. The term environment is also an aggregate of cultural and social conditions that affect the life of an organism or individual (Dinmohammadi, Peyrovi & Mehrdad, 2013). The term, environment, also means the characteristic or position of a linguistic factor in a sequence, the social, or physical setting where something happen or develops, these are changeable. The Merriam-Webster dictionary also defines environment as a computer interface used for various tasks, this is known as the programming environment.

Based Oxford dictionary environment is defined as the conditions or surroundings that an animal, person, or plant operates or lives. It is also defined as the natural world or a specific geographical region that affect human activity.

Medical dictionaries define environment as all the factors both psychological and physical that affect or influence the survival and life of a living thing. The aggregate of the condition that surround a living thing influences its survival. Environment is also defined as the aggregate of all the internal or external conditions and influences that affect the evelopement and life of an organism and could be divided into biological, physical, cultural, and social (Vaismoradi, Turunen & Bondas, 2013). These factors can influence the population’s health stratus and the surrounding conditions affect a person’s life.

Humans have always had a guiding mechanism within that controls them throughout life. For instance, the ancient Romans had a self-protective method and mechanism within, to guide them through life and its issues. Today, people recognize intuition as the guiding device to human life. The analysis of intuition shows that it offers insight during research to both unconscious and conscious individuals. Logic supports research, but excellent research cannot be attained through logicality only but also through great intuition. In most cases, high-level studies are achievable when intuition is used, developing research that is highly recognized around the world as it offers consistent support to creative, and original propositions.

Intuition is developed based on past human knowledge and experiences. Although intuition does not always lead to making significant decisions, it ensures that the knowledge gained is domain specific. If people are intuitive about one aspect of life, they are is likely to be as clueless as the average person in other subjects. Most outstanding researchers have a better intuition about the results they expect, making them create better studies. Intuition takes years to develop but does not transfer from one expertise domain to another, meaning that researchers have to remain specific to a given topics or subjects that they understand extensively based on their experiences and knowledge.

Intuition and research are compatible. Intuition allows researchers use their knowledge and human experiences to make better decisions and predict results. Although intuition takes years to develop, it ensures that an individual has extensive knowledge in a particular subject or topic. The knowledge gained through intuition is not transferable, making researchers stick to specific issues that they are experts.

Model Case

Health behavior change support systems is a software applications developed to persuade an alteration of attitude or change the behavior of people toward healthier life styles. The software applications are an important part of human-centric computing or persuasive computing. This means that they relate to computer and information science and other disciplines such a cognitive sciences, sociology, and psychology. HBCSS are applicable in many different areas that include promotion of healthy eating and exercise choices, observing of sleep disorders, smoking cessation, and mental and physical health related challenges (Garside & Nhemachena, 2013). With the extensive availability of tablets, smartphones and sensor-based devices, the design of these software applications have shifted from the traditional applications to most social web-based and ubiquitous solutions. Nonetheless, as the technical design adapts to the new realities of the users, the underlying behavior change theories and assumptions, which inform the design of software have been adapted in a similar pace with the HBCSS emergence.

In the past years, several reports from the World Health Organization have highlighted the high incidence of chronic diseases such as cancer, coronary heart disease, and diabetes. The contributing factor for such diseases includes tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, and sedentary lifestyles. Insert reports on the findings of the reviews of behavioral change interventions to decrease unhealthy behaviors or enhance healthy behaviors. The research utilized six different health-related activities in the review such as physical exercise, healthy eating, smoking, sexual risk taking among young people, alcohol misuse and use of illicit drugs (Hoeve, Jansen & Roodbol, 2014). The mass media interventions are effective in addressing the interconnection of attitudes, knowledge, and behavior within health promotion of social marketing. Population-level legislative intervention such as age limits of alcohol use and smoking bans tend to be effective in comprehensive campaigns to secure public support for underlying health promotion messages. The interventions at the community and individual level need to recognize the significance of changing attitudes and Knowledge along with the promotion of healthy behaviors (Yardley,  Morrison Bradbury & Muller, 2015). Although the current interventions include educational features, few evaluate their success.

The Health Behavior Change support systems mini track explores how the services and systems aimed at influencing well-being and health are designed, implemented, and developed. BCSS is a persuasive system meaning that they are designed to influence the user behaviors. The Health BCSSs offer a prominent section of applying persuasive system design. The mini track shows the way the persuasive theories and models are used to create effective and efficient HBCSSs as involvements contexts in healthcare such as persuasive decisions support system for persuasive games or safe-care to support chronic care (Jepson et al., 2010). The mini track also highlights how the end-users are involved in designing HBCSS into practice and the evaluation methods that are required to assess the impact of these systems on healthy living. The study uses one key persuasive software support category for HBCSS such as social support. Another factor used to evaluate these systems is a social influence, and the use of the grounded theory and text mining techniques to show the actual use of HBCSS.

Obesity is a severe health issue in the world. A 5% moderate loss of weighing could reduce the prevalence of metabolic syndrome that is important in the prevention of comorbidities caused by obesity. HBCSS emphasizes on an autogenous method where people utilize the system to influence their attitudes or behavior to achieve their health goals. Despite the promising results,   these health interventions innovations are considered a tool for delivering content that has no value or effect of its own (Heslop & Lu, 2014). This means that more studies are required on the actual system features to show its effectiveness.

White (2014) describe how users view persuasive software features implemented and designed into a support system. The findings of the web-based information system indicated that the self-monitoring, tunneling, and reminders are perceived as beneficial persuasive methods. Further, the need for social support showed the need to grow along the duration of the intervention. One factor, unobtrusiveness, was established to be important in all intervention stages rather than the early stages. The authors concluded that the persuasive software aspects have the power to influence the health behaviors of individuals. Through their systematicity, the BCSS framework and PSD model offer an effective support of the development and design of health intervention systems. In this case, the designer of HBCSS might select to implement self-monitoring techniques to assist people to adjust their individual goals with the system’s that offer better methods.

The Web innovation has made important changes in how healthcare is traditionally applied and practiced. Research indicates that the Web is capable of delivering efficient, effective, tailored, and interactive content to users. With the consideration of the extensive capabilities and range of the advanced technology, researchers in the health behavior have utilized the technology to deliver and create comprehensive and interactive programs with the ultimate purpose of health and behavior change promotion. Nonetheless, the limited studies have been carried out to show the effects of different features of websites that focus on the promotion of health behavior among adults. In a framework that would be used in the development of web-based interventions, which promote change in health behavior. The framework proposes an effective web-based intervention that maintains and promotes targeted health behavior alteration through instructional design stages. The framework considers the environmental influences, users, website engagement, and use that are determined by the external and internal support and efficient characteristics of the websites.
