The Summary of the Novel “The Green Mile” by Stephen King

The Green Mile is a horror story by Stephen King; he writes a story narrated by an elderly protagonist Paul Edgecombe at his home in Georgia Pines of the events that took place when he was a superintendent at Louisiana Cold Mountain state prison. John Coffey sentenced to death for being accused of rape and murder of two twin sisters (King 106). This book reveals that John Coffey was executed even though he was innocent of his accusations.

Death confined the whole novel by Stephen King. It leaves the reader wondering about the fates of every character described in the book. But the theme is specific since the story is about prisoner’s death sentence in an electric chair, for instance, John Coffey was facing execution by Paul Edgecombe on an electric chair. Also, John Coffey is accused of rape and murder of the two twin sisters, even though John Coffey was innocent, he later discovers that Wild Bill was responsible for the rape and murder of the two twin sisters. More then John Coffey transfers a brain tumor from Warden’s wife to the evil Percy Wetmore to shoot and kill Wild Bill for raping and killing the two girls.

In “The Green Mile” by Stephen King, the author points out racism as another theme in the story narrated by Superintendent Paul Edgecombe. The story is that based on the early days it’s enough to show that indeed racism was a big problem than the present. Paul Edgecombe narrates that John Coffey could not get a fair trial even though he was innocent.He could not win an appeal because of his black and also that John’s lawyer too gave up since he believed that he would never win the case because John Coffey was a black man.

The novel describes the main characters such as John Coffey as a tall black quite man who knows much less and keeps his secrets to himself. He is accused raping and killing of two young twin sisters by getting rid of their watchdog to persuade them from home (King 106).But in the book Green Mile the author describes John as a man who was afraid of darkness, he further states that John always wept whenever there was darkness. His fear of the dark is seen during his execution when he requests Paul Edgecombe to remove the mask because he gets agitated by darkness (King 434).

He further describes the Wild bill as an antagonist; he accidentally reveals to John Coffey that he is responsible for the death of the two you twin sisters that John Coffey was charged to have raped and murdered. This incident happens when John Coffey and other protagonist are taken Warden’s house to heal his wife who was suffering from the arm (King 420). When John meets Wild Bill, the wild bill takes hold of him, and this enables John Coffey to see through his heart that reveals that Wild Bill is responsible for the rape and murder of the young twin sisters. The guards drug Wild Bill and remove John Coffey out of prison to prevent Wild Bill from causing more trouble. John later transfers a brain tumor from Wardens wife to Percy Wetmore who kills Wild Bill.

He describes Percy Wetmore as a young and heartless guard and a nephew to the governor. His colleagues do not adore him because of his sadistic trait of antagonizing prisoners. His uncle being the governor protects him from being attacked by the guards. He dislikes homosexuality; he ambushed Eduard Delacroix who is a Cajun prisoner for purportedly touching him, even though it unintentional since Del pushed him while getting out of the prison truck.

Paul Edgecombe narrates that he was 40 years old when all these events were happening at the Cold Mountain state prison. He takes care of the prisoners in his block and ensures there is always peace among the inmates. He sympathizes with John Coffey and when he discovers that John is guilt-free only that he could not find a way to protect John from being executed(King 457). In the last chapter, the narrator discloses the times after the death of his wife that occurred in the tragic accident. He understands that John had been his savior that day and also left him with a load of survival. John Coffey increases Paul Edgecombe’s until he watches every person who is close to him die and eventually he is left alone.
