Nursing Theories

There is a specific interesting nursing theory that I have found interesting and has influenced my goals and values. To be specific the most interesting theory of all is the Environment Theory by Florence Nightingale. Florence has been described as the first theorist in the field of nursing. In her own beliefs she saw the environment as being an influential aspect when it comes to the well-being of people.  Her theory applied a number of ten aspects that are still in practice to date. To start with, she believed that patients should be subject to a clean environment and well-coordinated and synchronized environment temperature. Also, she supported the fact that the patients should live in a clean environment that is free of any type of contamination. The aspect of being free from contamination means that the room where the patients are should be clean. The patients should also be subjected to direct sunlight and should not be exposed to any form of unnecessary noise. Another important aspect is that the hospital facilities must be constructed in a manner that will support the patients to regain their health. She also put emphasis on the need to change the beddings regularly. Patients should also be provided with scenery that are aesthetic in order to propel the healing process. The health professionals, especially the nurses should be clean and keep the patients’ condition clean. Another important aspect associated with the theory is that the nurses should always be positive but on the other hand should not offer false hopes to the patients. Also the theory puts an emphasis on the need to offer the patients small portions of meal and avoid providing patient care when the patient is feeding as the aspect may be distracting. Last but not least the theory supports the idea that nurses should consider the patient wholly and not at an individual level alone. Florence believed that upholding these aspects will ensure that optimal healthcare is delivered to the patients.

It is clear that in any situation where the nurses are prevailed upon by a theoretical framework they tend to adopt an organized model that guides their performance. To start with, nurses can apply the theory to modify the environment of the patients. The modification of the patient’s environment can help to create a surrounding that will help improve the condition of the patients. Subjecting the patient to an environment that is conducive helps ensure that the patients have the required energy needed for the healing process. Additionally utilizing the aspect of cleanliness of the patients’ room ensures that the patients have proper ventilation and thus increasing their chances of becoming better again. Another aspect of Florence theory that the nurses can put into consideration is that of limited food intake. The aspect ensures that the patients feed on a balanced diet that will help improve their well-being.  Additionally, the reduction of noise in the patients room ensures that the patients are in a calm environment that supports the healing process for the patients. In conclusion, it is evident that the environment theory by Florence can help nurses optimize the provision of healthcare services to the patients.

The environment theory fits well in the professional practice in various ways and one includes ensuring tha nurses are concerned with the environment. The fact that the nurses are concerned with community health and public health means that the environment is one of the aspects that they should consider. Puttin consideration to the environment will ensure that the nurses are able to recognize and identify any environmental hazards that may be presented to people. The theory can help nurses develop effective measures that can be used to protect the environment. The theory also puts into consideration a number of aspects that can help improve the well-being of patients. These considerations are essential elements in the field of nursing and thus the fact shows that the theory fits in my professional practice.
