Both Clayton and Turkel give their opinion regarding connections. Clayton uses an explanation strategy to inform the audience about the impacts of social media. Social media provides people with a platform that would help them in fulfilling their aspiration to connect with other people (Pangelinan 391). Clayton supports his claims by giving an example of the responses people gave when asked on what motivates them to use social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. The respondents suggested that they always get encouraged by the desire to connect with other people. Also, the author ensures the credibility of the text by citing the views of various scholars and providing the audience with the data collected regarding the reasons why people think that social media helps them to connect with others. For instance, about sixty-four percent of the respondent believe that they always use social media so that they can stay in touch with their family members, while sixty-seven percent claimed that they use social media to stay connected with their current friends (Pangelinan 391).

Sherry Turkle also indicates that people use technological devices for connections. In her text, she wanted to impress the audience with a high level of intelligence. Sherry begins her rhetorical strategies by explaining to the audience the impacts of these connections in the lives of the users (Turkle 313). She indicates that people often sacrifice daily conversations so that they can stay connected. In the text, the author informs the audience that the technological devices for connections are likely to change a person and also what he or she does. The author uses reflection to support her argument. She reflects the claims of a businessman who said he does not have colleagues at work to share his ideas (Turkle 313). The businessman claims that many of the employees are always busy with their emails. However, he stops and then claim that he is making a false statement, and then suggest that he is the one who does not want people to disturb him since he is always busy on his Blackberry phone.

Additionally, the author informs the audience that the use of these technological connection devices makes people fear conversation. The strategy used by Sherry is appropriate since it can help in developing a connection between the audiences since they would be able to relate how the technologies have affected the individuals the author previously met. The blend enables the audience to understand the impacts of using technological devices in their lives.

Based on the above premises, it is evident that the two authors used different styles to evoke emotions among their target audience. The text shows that Sherry used reflection strategy to create a connection with the audience so that they could be able to relate the impacts of technological devices on the lives of people. On the other hand, Clayton in his text used an explanation strategy throughout the text. He uses this style to explain to the audience how social media helps in satisfying the desire of people to connect with others. He supported his claims by citing other authors so that he could ensure the credibility of his claims.

Another difference is that Sherry uses an invoking authority strategy. She provides her educational background. She indicates that she is a professor who teaches social studies of science and technology. These details inform the audience that she has spent many years studying the impacts of technology on the lives of people. The educational background helps her to defend herself when someone argues that her premises are unintelligent. Also, assists in informing the readers that she spent much time studying. As a result, the audience views her arguments as non-biased and also the readers see her as their fellow scholar. Hence, the details ensure the credibility of her article. Contrary, Clayton uses a different approach in his report. Instead of using the evoking authority strategy, the Clayton ensures the reliability of his text by giving the audience an empirical proof by providing research data and citing various scholars.

In conclusion, both Sherry and Clayton articles are about the social impacts of technology. Even though they applied different strategies to accomplish their aims with the audience and purpose of the text, all their arguments emphasized explaining the social impacts of technology. Both articles provided proof of the social implications of technology. Hence they are likely to benefit the intelligent audience.
