Capstone Project: Cleveland Clinic

Introduction 

The selected organizations Cleveland clinic serves to give both medical care to the population and education for individuals who have interest in health. Therefore, the hospital is both a care center and a research center for advancement of health in there society. Cleveland works as a nonprofit facility and offers affordable care to the patients from diversified background (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Therefore, it aims at ensuring that a healthy society is available and this affects positively productivity of the population. The reason for selecting Cleveland Clinic as the organization for study is its diversified services to the community. The organization aims at ensuring that there is progressive response to upcoming health challenges. Indeed, the clinic supports research that help introduce new ways of handling medical challenges in the society (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Further, the organization looks at both present and future health welfare of the society. Therefore, it operates with the aim of influencing positive health changes in the population. In addition, the hospital has holistic mission that provides quality care to the patients and investigate their problems (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The organization further embraces a program of continually training its employees to ensure they are responsive to changing needs in the healthcare. Therefore, the organization acts as good choice for understanding health care in United States. 

Analysis of the organization

The Organization Structure 

In their pursuit of success by Cleveland clinic, the hospital depends on reliable leadership structures that help in enhancing the effectiveness of the hospital in supporting the community. The structure of governance in the hospital comprises of board of directors and board of trustees (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The trustees serve to give advice to the directors to ensure that the hospital remains focused in its mission. There is also board of governors that comprises of the medical practitioners’ representatives especially the physicians. The board of governors ensures that surgical and medical activities in the hospital match the expectation of the patients (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The management structure together ensures that the hospital embraces principles of good governance consistent with legal standards.

The board of directors is the governing body of the hospital with responsibilities of directing the daily affairs and operations of the organization (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The members of the board come from the community where leaders with exemplary experience and expertise selected to boost performance of the hospital. The board members are volunteers and thus not paid for their services to the hospital. The board of directors has different committees such as audit, finance, investment, quality, research and education among others (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Board of trustees comes from selection of experts in various fields that are beneficial to the health systems. The trustees work under policy that guides conflict of interest within the organization. On the other hand, board of governors administers and manages activities of the hospital as per policies of the organization. The hospital also has an executive leadership lead by chief executive officer and president of the organization. The chief executive gets assistance from managers who are in charge of patients, designs, human resource, finance, information, operations, quality and integrity officer (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). 

Facility Physical Settings

Cleveland started in 1921 and over the years has expended its facilities, which goes beyond Ohio to other states in America (Mahar et.al. 2018). Over the years, the hospital has built more than 16 surgery and family health centers to serve the community (Mahar et.al. 2018). Further, the hospital has embraced mergers of some community hospitals to increase its capacity to handle changing needs of patients. The hospital has established clinics in Nevada, Florida and Las Vegas, which are specialist centers for neurocognitive disorders (Mahar et.al. 2018). The hospital opened a 26,000 square foot clinic for outpatient services in 2006 with the aim of preventing diseases and improving health welfare of human beings(Mahar et.al. 2018). The hospital has further opened a clinic in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with Mubadala Health center (Mahar et.al. 2018). In responding to heart diseases, Cleveland Clinic has opened Vascular Institute and Miller Family Heart to serve the community in United States (Mahar et.al. 2018).  The physical settings of the hospital allow easy movements within the clinic with different departments put in a single building. The hospital further owns sophisticated medical instruments that help respond to different diseases and complication that relates to heart. 

Patient or Client Base

Cleveland Clinic serves more than 7 million patients in every year (Mahar et.al. 2018). In 2017, the hospitals registered 7.6 visitors with different needs (Mahar et.al. 2018). Respiratory health complication patients dominate a significant number of clients who visits the hospital(Mahar et.al. 2018). The hospital handles patients who have various needs where a significant number are outpatient clients. However, through the installation of new technological equipment the hospital is able to manage complicated heart surgeries (Stoller, 2014).  The patients comes from varying background with some unable to support their healthcare bills. However, the hospital provides a system that helps the patients acquire health care irrespective of their background. Indeed, the hospital gets significant from donors who support covering the expenses of the organization. The hospital employees are over 50,000 and they help in handling the different needs of their clients (Stoller, 2014). The physicians and nurses in the hospital are approximately 15,000 and they are able to give adequate attention to the growing number of patients visiting the hospitals (Stoller, 2014). 

Level of Clinical Activity and Research 

Cleveland Clinic has significant number of research activities that takes place in enhancing the approach of health of the community. The hospital has about 100 accredited training programs for resident nurses (U.S News & World Report, 2018). Through Vascular Institute and Miller Family Heart, the hospital serves the greatest number of heart patients in United States (U.S News & World Report, 2018). The hospital also has a cancer care program that offers music therapies and free wigs for individuals who loose hair through chemotherapy. In 2017, the hospital handled about 700 organic transplant procedures, which included lungs, hearts, pancreases and liver (U.S News & World Report, 2018). The hospital also has Concussion Center that supports researchers, physicians and sport medicine personnel to combine their effort and offer service to concussed patients (U.S News & World Report, 2018). The hospital also embraces innovative approaches in handling its patients. Currently, the hospital has a capacity to carry a bypass surgery of coronary artery and larynx transparent (U.S News & World Report, 2018). The achievement makes the hospital a preferred choice by patients suffering from different ailments. Further, there clinic is an attractive destination for researchers that aim at establishing adequate ways of responding to complex health problems in the society. 

The Mission, Vision, and Goals of the Organization and How the Organization Supports Them 

The mission of Cleveland Clinic is to provide best care to the sick while investigating their problems and furthering education of their workforce (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The vision of the hospital is striving to provide best patient experience in the world together with better clinical outcomes (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Further, the hospital has a vision to be a leader in research and education matters that relates to health. The goals of the organization include excelling in specialized health care that supports extensive research (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Further, the hospital has the objective of developing and applying new technology in serving the needs of its patients. Additionally, the organization aims to attract and retain qualified scientific and medical staff in its services (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The management believes that qualified workforce is essential in helping them achieve their mission. The organization also aims at promoting affordable care to the population and offer quality services. 

The organization supports achievements of its vision, mission and goals through embracing of different values within the hospital. The hospital management has a quality management committee that continually measures quality and improve outcomes of the patients (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Further, in an effort to retain experienced workforce the hospital encourages invention in its workforce to come up with new ways of handling health problems. The organization further embraces teamwork to ensure that quality care is available for their clients (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Additionally, the hospital supports integrity and high moral standards are evident in the workforce. Therefore, the employees have high levels of commitment, respect and honesty as they conduct their work. Compassion is also available from the workers who show care and empathy to their patients making them heal relatively faster. 

Community and Global Impact 

Cleveland hospital has significant impact on the community where it provides affordable care to the population. The caregivers in the hospital coordinate to offer safe and timely services to the patients. Therefore, there is progressive strive to offer quality services to the patients (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The physicians further embrace culture of empathy that allows a positive relationship between the medical practitioners and their clients. The organization furthers supports development of the society it operates through offering work opportunities for qualified personnel (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Actually, a significant a number of subordinate staff in the hospital comes from members of neighboring society. The organization further provides community outreach services to the society through programs that complement medical services (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). There are programs of training the community of now to remain health through preventive mechanisms. The hospital further supports the community through subsidized cost of health care ensuring that significant number of people can afford healthcare. Additionally, the organization supports education of some members of the community to prepare them to be medical caregivers in future. The organization supports environmental conservation through precautionary approach of avoiding incidences of pollution (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). The organization operates under the guidelines of understanding that they are stewards of the planet and have responsibility of boosting and preserving its posterity (Cleveland Clinic, 2018). Through the approach, the hospital has a mechanism that supports environmental management through sustainable waste management program.
