“A Doll House” Analysis

Child neglect falls under various categories. A mother leaving their child is considered emotional and psychological neglect. Parents withholding their affection from their children over an extended period can be considered neglect. In light of this knowledge, although Nora doubts her qualifications to raise her children, her decision to leave would be similar to child neglect. Unfortunately, Nora was also faced with the dilemma of her troubled marriage, raising the question, should she have remained married for the sake of her children. Nora was not happy in her marriage and staying in it might have affected her emotionally and psychologically and in return affect her stability as a mother. Considering the two conflicting situations, this would have affected Nora’s point of anagnorisis and peripeteia in various ways. Ideally, towards the end Nora seems to understand her character’s true identity as a mother and turns around in her decision to leave. However, considering that Nora should not have stayed in her marriage because of her children guided by the theory of existentialism, which posits that individuals are responsible of determining their development through their free will. Definitely, this would have affected her moment on anagnorisis and peripeteia. Additionally, with the knowledge that leaving would be considered neglect would have made it easier for Nora to stay
