Description of Listening Experience

My listening experience where I experienced discriminative entry was a Ted Talk by Sir Ken Robinson, who made an entertaining and profoundly moving case, supporting the need to create an education system that nurtures creativity as opposed to one that undermined creativity. For this talk, my main aim was to evaluate the discriminative form of listening. The main purpose of discriminative listening is to go beyond the words being heard and detecting the underlying message through gaining comprehension on the different sounds used.

Purpose and Behavior as a Listener

The main purpose of a believer, in this case, is to make sense of the meaning of what is being expressed through different sounds used on speech. For a listener, utilizing discriminative listening involves learning how to discriminate between sounds. This allows one to discern the emotions that the speaker is experiencing.

Evaluation of Listening Strengths and Weaknesses

A key strength of discriminative listening is that it goes beyond the basic auditory act and considers listening as a visual act. Through this form of listening, I was able to take into consideration the body language of the speaker. Additionally, with this form of listening, it is possible to understand more than just the verbal message being passed, as well as, the emotional connection of the speaker and the message being put across. A weakness in this form of listening is that one needs to have the ability to discriminate the sounds in a language. It may be difficult to listen perfectly where the speaker is from a different language as one is unable to subtle the necessary sounds.

What I Learned About My Listening

I came to understand that most of the times, I have tended to ignore messages being put across by failing to get the emotional connection of the speaker.
