The United States should establish a comprehensive immigration reform

The statement provided calls for the updating of immigration reform to one that is humane to the immigrants and economical beneficial to the United States. The statement portrays the current immigration policies as being unfair. The statement highlights the political calls to abolish ICE. The discussion is rather a turn to an unhealthy direction. Illegal migration by all means poses a threat to public safety and costly to the taxpayers. ICE’s mission indicates that it is geared towards enforcement, preventing terrorism and combatting the illegal movement of people and trade. From this, a major disadvantage of the plan to abolish ICE is that it leaves the country exposed and more vulnerable to terrorism. This implies that a move to abolish ICE may protect the illegal immigrants but makes the USA citizens more vulnerable to terror attacks due to elimination of the checks and control that were placed by ICE. 

The proposed immigration reform proposes the shifting in resources from ICE to supporting asylum seekers. This approach is not ideal as it equates two elements that are unrelated in terms of scope. This is because the ICE is not only focused on enforcement against illegal immigration but also serves other purposes geared towards protecting the American citizens. The argument presented in the statement portrays the ICE and asylum seekers/illegal immigration as mutually exclusive. The argument fails to acknowledge that illegal immigrants are not synonymous to asylum seeking. Asylum seeking has a legally prescribed due process that needs to be followed. However, illegal immigration undermines the due process set as the immigrants seek to escape due process of gaining entry into the country.
