    Within the play “Trifles,” written by Susan Glaspell, the play takes darker tone with the feeling of being in a limited and confined place. Since the play reflects on spousal abuse and limited roles of women in the household and society, the play depicts a feeling of isolation when exploring the perception of Mrs. Minnie Wright and the witness report. Since the story is being told through witness and Mrs. Minnie Wright, the setting has a dark-grayish tone, with warm colors completely devoided out of the setting. The time frame of the play has historical history in American culture. With the play taking place in 1916, three years prior to the congress passing the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. The play “Trifles” emphasizes the time period were social expectations, how women were expected to act when being faced in patriarchal, and common and where spousal abuse was common and widely more tolerated. The audience gets a small glimpse of what society must have been like. From Glaspell depiction of the different scenes, the audience reading the play should have an easier time imaging a dark interior of a farm house, with early 20th century furniture that includes very dull lighting.
