The mission statement for Public Square is as follows: 
WHO WE ARE:THE WORLD DOESN’T NEED ANOTHER CAFÉ. YOU KNOW THIS. WE KNOW THIS. AND YET, HERE WE ARE. WHY? BECAUSE WHAT THE WORLD DOES NEED IS CONNECTION. PEOPLE ARE BUSY. WE SPEND A MAJORITY OF OUR DAYS BUMPING INTO ONE ANOTHER WITHOUT NOTICING. OUR EYES ARE ON PHONES AND OUR NOSES IN LAPTOPS, WORKING, STAYING BUSY, AND ATTEMPTING SOME SEMBLANCE OF RELATIONSHIP. TRUTH IS, WE’RE NOT ACTUALLY CONNECTING AT ALL. NOT AUTHENTICALLY. WE BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE NEED A MORE GENUINE TYPE OF CONTACT… SOMETHING REAL. PUBLIC SQUARE IS A PLACE FOR EXACTLY THAT: A PLACE TO SEE AND BE SEEN, A PLACE TO HEAR AND BE HEARD, AND A PLACE TO SERVE AND BE SERVED. WE DO THIS IN THREE WAYS: COFFEE, CULTURE, AND CAUSE.
This mission statement focuses on community and connection. They are attempting to sell an experience, not just coffee.  Each of their drinks comes with a inspirational quote card.  However, I found that the mission statement is lacking information on the quality of their products and food.  As important as connections are, consumers want to go to restaurants with delicious foods and beverages, and I believe that they missed an opportunity to highlight this.
The vision for Brew Coffee Spot is below: 
QUALITY MAKES A DIFFERENCE Brew Coffee Spot uses award-winning coffee that is 100% certified organic (from the only roaster in San Diego with that commitment), ethically sourced, and scientifically roasted using standards established by the SCAA. Our menu features multiple tea options, flavored kombuchas, kefir cold-pressed juices, artisan breads, quiches, pies, & pastries, freshly made paninis, acai and coconut yogurt bowls, vegetarian & vegan options, and more.
This description focus on quality and the ingredients in their coffee and food.  It sets itse;f apart with the commitment to serving local, organic roasted coffee.  However, the company description is lacking information on their culture and events, including live music, trivia nights and painting.
Both of these coffee shops attempt to set themselves apart as more than just a place to get coffee.  In addition, they seek to be a place for community gathering and connection.  This should be reflected in their mission statements, as well as a focus on the food that they serve.  I believe that in order to set themselves apart from other coffee shops and cafes, both of these characteristics should be highlighted clearly.
