The emergence of several challenges in the healthcare landscape today has led to the prominence of the role of the nurse as an advocate. Whether working as a nurse manager, at the point of care or as a nursing educator, the nursing professional is today presented with a plethora of scenarios that require them to advocate for patients, the profession and even the institution. These include quality of care issues, cost of healthcare, healthcare resources, patient centered care and so forth (Tomajan, 2012). This paper describes various strategies that can be used for advocacy at the workplace to bring about change.
Nurses can advocate for their profession by sharing with all stakeholders about the realities they face in everyday work. There are many assumptions made about the profession and in the process, the huge amount of hard work and obstacles like shortages of workforce and resources faced by nurses go unappreciated (Tomajan, 2012). By painting a realistic image of nursing, nurses are able to draw empathy from stakeholders and probably generate some support. Another strategy that can be used is taking active membership in committees, councils and other forums where they can articulate nursing issues for addressing by all stakeholders (Priest, 2013). Emerging challenges and the future of nursing can be advocated for through such means. They can also carry out patient satisfaction surveys and other researches to understand patient needs and bring them into the spotlight in order to align organizational priorities with population health.
It is clear that nurses have lots of opportunities for advocacy that if taken can improve the workplace and bring about change. It is upon them to take such opportunities as well as figure out ways in which they can bring others on board to advance advocacy and change.
