Impacting Positively on the School Climate

School climate is an aspect of learning that has a direct and material effect on the wellbeing of learners and their educational outcomes. Two ways that a teacher can do to help a school improve its environment include promoting safety and the encouraging a good school physical environment.

Safety is a major concern to many learners and their parents especially with the rampant school shootings that has been happening in out country. A teacher can assist in initiating and developing practices that are in support of safety. For instance, designing, promoting, and enforcement of positive school-wide behavior programs. These rules should be set and communicated clearly in a consistent manner. To ensure that there is clarity, students should be taught sufficient conflict resolution lessons by such a teacher. Adult intervention guidelines should be provided to ensure that there is no unnecessary intervention from adults. Rules should be consistently communicated.

When it comes to physical environment, a teacher can encourage students to participate in school activities. For instance, students can be challenged to decorate hallways using their own creative displays. During times when there are visitors, students can be given the responsibility to welcome guests and conduct simple businesses at school. The physical surrounding should be made to appeal to students but their efforts should count.

In conclusion, the outcomes for these two proposals are geared for the making of great students, who, according to Loukas (2007), develop a deep sense of belonging which is important in developing motivated students. Kelly, Thornton, & Daugherty (2005) explain that such cultivated climates motivate students to become ambitious leaders who understand the need for order and functional systems. To the teacher, a sense of job satisfaction and self-efficacy come easily as enumerated by Taylor & Tashakkori (1995).
