THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN RIGHTS AND DUTIES

Rights are legal, social or ethical principles of freedom or entitlements; that is, they are fundamental. Duties are things that are expected to be done due to moral or legal obligation.

The state through its security agencies has the duty to provide security to all its citizens for social good which is their right. Therefore it is the duty of every individual citizen to inform the  state agencies on any suspicious actions that may cause insecurity in his neighborhood.

It is the duty of parents to take care of their children and failure do so denies the children their rights. The above relationship can well be demonstrated for example when a parent fails to take a child to school which is their duty, he denies that child’s right to education.  For this reason parents ought to do all that is in their ability to ensure that they provide for their children’s education and other rights.

It is the right of every citizen to enjoy his freedom of speech. In case he abuses it by spreading rumors or preaching violence which may cause social unrest, it is the duty of the government or the state to his right of speech.  This can be done by revoking the individual’s right to address then public.

The mentioned relations between rights and duties, there for clearly prove that rights and duties go hand in hand. Therefore it is impossible to co-exist without  rights and duties. Rights without duties have no meaning and duties without rights have no sense.
