Orlando’s theory is informed to have been developed from two questions: one being the effort to establish what drives nursing roles. This theorist is noted to have been dissatisfied with the response that nursing responsibilities are probably prompted by the employer’s of hospital rules and not from the needs realized when nurses attend to patients. The other question being, determining what constitutes the relationship between a patient and the nurse that can cause the nurse to realizing the needs of patients and enabling effective patient care to be given. Thus, Orlando’s theories are focused on the kind of patient-nurse relationship that comprises of suitable forces that cause the nurse to know the exact needs of the patient and his or her experiences when being cared for. In light of this, nurse’s roles should be professional, automatic and deliberative and these executions should be purely based on the patient-nurse relationship that is reinforced by nurse’s observation on the patient. This observation can be verbally done or observing patient’s(s’) behavior(s). Moreover, the relationship is also strengthened by the nurse’s response to her observation and a response which has been processed by her thoughts, feelings and perceptions about the patient’s(s’) needs. On this basis, Orlando describes the nursing process as one that must be driven by: (a) what a nurse communicates with a patient must be in consistent with the conditions of the explained reactions (b) her expressions to a patient must also much the reaction conditions explained earlier (c) that the patient(s) should be aware that all the assistance they are getting from the nurses are purely from her individual nature or calling but not basically following hospital rules (d) that the patient should verify any item that the nurse(s) express (Alligood, 2013a; Meleis, 2012; Alligood, 2013b).
