Discuss how magic realism is used in the plot.
Magic realism is used in the plot when the character’s life and the dream are intertwined. It gets difficult to tell when the plot has shifted to reality or is still in the dream.
Discuss both characters. Actions outside their sleep state.
The narrator is most likely a man. He is a curious man because he remembers seeing the lady in his dream when he actually sees her in reality. “I understood that it was I who was looking at her for the first time.” He is also an observant man because he remembers seeing the lady in his dream.
The second character is a woman. There are indications that she is a lonely and tormented woman. The woman keeps remembering the phrase, “eyes of a blue dog.” She also talks about how her body feels hollow, “sometimes, when I sleep on my heart, I can feel my body growing hollow and my skin is like plate.” She remembers this outside her sleep state.
Why the woman in the real world writes about the eyes of a blue dog.
The woman in the real world writes about the eyes of a blue dog because the dream is easy to forget. It is easy to forget the events in the dream despite her having a difficult time with her sleeping patterns and sanity as well.
Why the two characters do not touch one another.
The two characters do not get to touch each other because on is alive in the sleep state and nowhere to be found outside the sleep state. There is a likelihood that the characters in the dream state have met in reality and none took note of the other. In reality, the two characters are strangers to each other.
What the story tells about our longings and hidden desires. Discuss with examples.
The story tells of the desires of the woman in her sleep state to meet the man who put the words, “eyes of a blue dog in her head.” She tries really hard to remember these words outside her sleep state, “Still I’ve always said the same thing and when I wake up, I’ve always forgotten what the words I can find you with are.”
One of these days.
The tone of the opening, how and why it changes. Give examples.
The opening tone of this story is scornful. The dentist has no degree yet he rises very early to go and open his clinic. The tone quickly changes to that of spite and bitterness when the mayor walks in. the dentist continues to work on the false teeth yet the mayor is in pain and needs the services. “The mayor wants to know if you’ll pull his teeth.” Those were his son’s word to which he responded, “Tell him I’m not here.” This exchange indicates that there is a problem between the two men yet the cause cannot be established at the beginning of the story. We later come to find out that the mayor was responsible for a loss the dentist knew about. “Now you’ll pay for the twenty dead men.”
Discuss the mayor and contrast his character to that of the dentist.
The mayor is a mean and dictatorial man. He threatens the dentist that he will shoot him if he does not pull his tooth yet he really needs his help. The mayor is obviously also rude and demanding. He treats the town as if it is his own private property, a thing the dentist knows yet spites. “To you or the town?” That is the dentist’s response to the mayors “orders” that the bill be sent to him. It is a kind of reminder to the mayor that the town is not his private property. The dentist on the other hand is a gentle person. Even with his bitterness towards the mayor, he still agrees to pull his tooth. He feels bad about the death of the twenty men, he is humane unlike the mayor.
Why the hostility between the two characters.
The two characters are hostile towards each other because the mayor feels superior and clearly, the dentist does not treat him as such. The dentist did not mind the mayor hearing him deny that he is present in his clinic. “He says you are, too, because he can hear you.” They represent the two different personalities of the people in the society, the high and mighty and the common people.
How Marquez uses images to covey the changing mood of the story.
Marquez uses images to show how the mood of the story changes. The story changes mood when the dentist agrees to see the mayor and he indicates that half the face of the mayor was swollen. It makes the reader pity the mayor even if he is not such a likeable character.
How the mayor and the town are the “same damn thing.”
The mayor and the town are the “same damn thing” because he is the face of the town. The town is the mayor’s work place. It is what makes him have the status and the title, mayor.
