Toxic Substances

The level of toxicity of a substance should be related to the level of exposure to human life. Substances that are most likely to be used by humans should have the minimum toxicity that would still serve our needs. In our day to day lives, we come into contact with various substances which would be fatal if abused or if mistakes occur. These substances include everyday rodent poisons, farm sprays and even insecticides. While some of this substances often cause minimal damage when used it controlled amounts, studies have shown that continued absorption could result in various problems, some of which would be passed to our offspring (“ATSDR – Priority List of Hazardous Substances”, 2013).

While the various bodies are working hard to ensure the control of toxic substances, there is still a lot to be done. In my opinion, more should be done in the form of tougher laws that govern the manufacture, distribution and usage of these substances. Slight mistakes could be fatal and this can only be avoided by implementing laws to control them. People should also be educated more about toxic substances to avoid mistakes. These organizations should contribute towards this end (“Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) | Agriculture | US EPA”, 2012).

If I were in a position of authority, I would push for reforms in the manufacture distribution and usage of toxic substances. These reforms would come in the form of stricter rules regarding what can be manufactured and what cannot, what should be used in controlled environments, and education of people on the dangers of using toxic substances. I would also control what substances can be obtained and how easy to obtain they were. This way, I would contribute towards a safer world for this and later generations (“Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) | Agriculture | US EPA”, 2012).
