A Jazz Music concert was held on September 14, 2014 at The Edgde of SMC Performing Arts Center. The artists in performance were Donald Barrett, who was doing the drums, Traever Ware with the base, Eric Person with Saxophones and Cary DeNigris with the guitar. The six songs performed included Yesterdays, Carry On, Beauty, Driving Rain, Stop and Pendulum Swing. I enjoyed every bit of the music concert. Each of the six pieces of music had something to learn from them.
The concert began with the Yesterdays, a song that started quietly with the guitar plucking softly and the rest of the instruments joining slowly and melodically. It made for the best song to call the audience’s attention from their murmuring. While it only began slowly, the music eventually gained tempo and the texture of the music eventually became more intense. The drums gave the music an ever faster and eventually depicted the climax when it came by flattening and eventually dipping.
Carry On was the second piece of the evening. It was initiated with a striking solo saxophone melody and gave the evening a melancholy mood. The mood was enhanced by the slow and playful beat of the drums and an intimate interplay between the base singer and the saxophone. The music eventually closed with a climax that was constructed with a forceful beat from the guitar and everything else in the background.
The third and the fourth pieces, Beauty and Driving Rain, were rather identical. They were played in a rather connected nature and the climax of the first was put aside for a joint climax. The two were also characterized by the energy that was evident from the theatrics of the entire band. All the instruments were played in unison from the first to the last note except for the saxophone which drew out earlier at the beginning of the climax.
The fifth piece of music was Stop. Ike the previous two, the music was full of energy. Moreover, the wind instruments were removed from the composition. Initially, I had thought that this would have a detrimental effect t the performance. However, I noted the only saxophonist in the band was playing the lead singer and that his vocals were armed for this one. His tenor voice was rather well armed for this song. The lead instruments were the drums and these gave the music a fair and this gave the music a fair amount of energy. It also fitted well with the theme of the song with its timed stops at the end of each verse.
The last piece of music was the Pendulum Swing. The drums introduced the music with a fast beat. Each of the other instruments were then introduced one at a time before the vocals were eventually introduced and the instruments slightly suppressed to an equal level. The vocals of the bass singer were the only vocals that would be heard, a slight departure from the normal tenor voice. While this would be expected to give the performance an injurious effect, it gave it a rather an impactful one.
The concert was one that I had looked forward to for a long time. I was not disappointed. Instead, I got a little more than I had expected. I was hoping they would play the Pendulum Swing song and when hey did I felt set to leave. The attendance also gave me a feel at the way music can be altered and changed to fit an audience and an occasion.
