Alice in Wonderland

The book “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll issues a string of events in which Alice has to fight with her identity as a woman and also as a youth in her society. Alice is faced with myriad issues that make her not to really understand who she is in such a highly contested environment where everyone is working hard to be acknowledged and given credit. Alice is a woman who thinks so much and often finds herself fighting her thoughts or acting in the same manner that her thoughts direct her. Alice is a woman who is almost losing her identity. He also thinks that she deserves to be given the room by the society to prove who she is without being infringed on. To the least, she thinks of her position as a woman in society. From the book, three philosophical issues inclusive of personhood, autonomy, feminism and can are evident.

As she wonders in thought, Alice wonders a lot concerning what it is to be a person. She feels that being a person is about knowing the things that matter in your society and the things that matter to you alone. It is the ability to observe life from the angle of an individual not just in the present stature but beyond being the same individual that people see. It is an ideal observation of the steps that one has come through in the mental state and then coming up with better resolutions for personal benefit. Carroll describes the issue of personhood in Alice by first observing that she is a curious child who will not allow anything to happen without their observation (Lloyd, 2010). She is among the few children that Carroll quotes that they keep an eye on adulthood and growing up (Carroll, 1946). Personhood is the philosophical ideology that makes people to grow old and to realize that life is much more about considerations of the present alone but also the consideration of the past and the milestones that one has to achieve in the future. Alice, therefore, disputes her identity because she is so much into personhood that she loses herself. 

Autonomy is another philosophical identity issue that arises from the text.  Definitively, autonomy is the ability to have the ability to perform as per the wishes of self. It is the ability to be given to act without the influence of other people. Alice in the text thinks of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Alice believes that it was only in the Garden of Eden where men could act with absolute autonomy. There was not a man enough who would hold an individual back and try to force them to conform to their beliefs. Therefore, Alice desires to achieve the same autonomy when she is of age. Her utmost desire is to live in a world where she is not judged for being whom she is (Bryan, 2009). According to her bodily transformation, Alice believes that she has become independent especially when she is able to encounter the garden alone. She opines to an identity philosophy that makes her believe that being independent and allowed to perform and work autonomously, she had secured her position in the society where she can make her decisions alone as opposed to the time when she was tiny and those around her could control her.

Lastly, the philosophy of feminism as an identity that lingers in the mind of the Alice is denoted. Alice in the very first instances in the book believes that she is beautiful being a woman. Alice is confused about her identity as a female and therefore thinks that she can convince herself by using a male rabbit which is an accurate representation of a man (Forss, 2013). She then handles the rabbit and at instances when the rabbit looks like it is opposing her directions, Alice kicks him up and hurts him. Carroll explicitly shows the changes that have taken place in her body have made her view that she is a woman enough (Carroll, 1946). Thus she is left in the desire of being treated as fit as that of the male gender. The idea of feminism as an identity philosophy therefore evidently shows the position the idea of Alice wanting to be realized as a woman and given the same position as her male counterparts.

In conclusion, the story, “Alice in Wonderland” by Carroll Alice shows a descriptive view of a woman who is lost in identity. Alice is a woman who of late feels like a woman and that she should be treated as equally as men. In that essential view, personhood, autonomy, and feminism are the most outstanding a woman and that she should be treated as equally as men.
