Although Charles was a Boring Husband, he was still Emma’s best Choice

In the novel Madame Bovary, Emma’s struggles seem to emerge from the way marriage was defined in the19th century. During that period, marriage was not mostly about love of two people but more of an economic-based agreement. Thus, a man and a woman would marry even if they were not compatible emotionally. Charles was a doctor and was economically able to marry Emma but Emma found out that she is emotionally incompatible with Charles. Instead of working to build her marriage with Charles, she opted to go outside it to search for an enduring love relationship. However, the men she encounters as her lovers end up disappointing her. To explore the good and the bad side of each man Emma dated in order to establish which man suited Emma more, their points are highlighted as follows: Charles was economically stable but was dull in developing a romantic and love relationship with Emma. Charles was obsessed with his money rather than meeting Emma’s needs. Rodolphe was Emma’s first lover and he used his poetic skills to seduce Emma but Emma later learns that the seductions were false as Rodolphe dumped her. However, heart -broken, Emma manages to encounter Leon a young student taking law and she forgets the tough lessons that Rodolphe had taught her. However, the new relationship end up being a monotonous affair and Emma becomes disappointed with it. More so, Emma used to get money from Charles to support her relationship with Leon. Of the three men, Emma should have maintained her husband Charles. Charles truly loved and cared for her and she should have shared her concerns with him and may be, Charles would have improved. Even though Leon was romantic, he was too young for her and was still a student who could not maintain her classy lifestyle. Rodolphe was not an honest man and it was dangerous for Emma to trust him.
