An early childhood classroom is a great place for children to learn and develop their social skills as they interact with each other. Research shows that classroom environment, if well planned will go a long way to help develop social skills and prevent behavior issues, (Ostrosky, et al, 2008.)
Calling Out In Class
Calling out answers and comments in class unfortunately is a behavior that is likely to happen in an early childhood class. I would discourage it by explaining to the children that it is wrong and always fail to acknowledge or respond to it. If the behavior persists, scrutinize the reason for calling out and react appropriately.
Hand Raising
This is a very positive behavior and should be continually encouraged by acknowledging the raising of a hand divide the class into two groups and make a game out of questions and answers. Each team scores a point for each correct answer. If a team member calls out an answer out of turn, that team loses a set amount of points.
Demanding students
I would give this student more responsibilities and roles to help nourish their confidence and provide different classroom experiences to show them the importance of each one of them no matter their contributions.
Curriculum planning ideas
Transitions
Having a moment to prepare for change from one activity to another will help the students cope with the change. This will give them enough time to prepare from the end of one activity to the beginning of another. Counting the children down is effective and will help them adjust mentally and physically thus saving time and helping them start a fresh on another activity.
Consistent Routine
Consistent is very crucial to children at this stage. It is important that they know their routine and be responsible enough to follow it. A routine will help them operate with minimal supervision thus one doesn’t have to constantly remind them of what is expected.
Balance Activities
Active activities will make the students energetic and high in adrenaline which will make them sharper and focused while passive activities will make them calm down and relaxed. These different activities should be well balanced to help them be under control.
Conclusion
The above activities, if introduced in early childhood curriculum will go a long way in developing the young students’ character, ideology and socially. Policy makers and academics should be able to bring different perspective to early childhood curriculum for young children to help them learn and develop.
