An unethical business practice that popped into my mind for this assignment was the Fyre Festival scandal in 2017. This scandal involved deceptively advertising a luxurious musical festival experience in the Bahamas in the guise to entice people to get a “luxury” credit card in order to gain access. Attendees did not receive the benefits that they were promised when purchasing their tickets and even worse, were not refunded by the festival after all of the drama. This scandal received a lot of media coverage through social media and Netflix and Hulu Documentaries. The issue of Fyre Festival mainly lied in the organizers’ poor planning and violation of initial contracts.
In terms of moral disengagement, there was a lot of displacing and diffusing responsibility based on the interviews of the lower-level people involved in the documentary. The organizers tended to display a lot of moral justification. Since the event’s primary issues were poor planning and unforeseen circumstances, a lot of the executives made excuses about trying to continue the experience despite acknowledging that the festival was falling apart because of the financial investments of other parties. Lower-level people involved claimed to be completely in the dark and only following their orders.
I think times when I did not live up to my own ethical standards usually involve someone I care about doing something I may not see as ethically correct. I think caring or loving another person and trying to understand where they are coming from is the only thing that has made me question my own ideals.

Wells Fargo has committed unethical practices that involved them opening accounts without people’s permission or knowledge of them doing it. The blind spots that motivated these unethical decisions was the fact that employees were threatened to open new accounts, or they were fired. The use of the theory of moral disengagement would have made it so that the employees wouldn’t feel bad and keep doing it because they would be able to meet their requirements and keep their jobs. I am pretty sure there has been times where I have not lived up to my own ethical standards. I cannot think of a specific example right now, but I know that if I had violated my personal standards it was for a personal reason. I mostly make decision like that if my decision would help benefit me in a major way. At times I might not feel good about myself but sometimes you have to do what needs to be done.
