Assignment Instructions: Standardization of Arguments SEE THE LECTURE PAGE FOR INSTRUCTIONS … What your standardization for the assignment should look like. Apply the Method of Standardization for a total of 3 arguments: From exercise 7.4, pg. 188, Standardize #2 From exercise 7.4, pg. 189-190 Standardize #6 From exercise 7.4, pg. 190 Standardize #9 ∙ These must be created & submitted as a Microsoft Word Document. ∙ Save the document as: YourLastName_A7.doc. For example: Moschella_A7.doc ∙ Go to and Click on the link for Assignment #7. At the bottom, you will see a button for Uploading your document. ∙ Label each argument with the page number and problem number for each argument: such as pg. 188, #2. Please submit them in the order they are given above. Assignment Standardization Method — There are 8 steps! Argument Identification Paragraph. (Steps 1 – 5) 1. Read the Argument and … & Type out the entire original argument as it is presented in the textbook exercise. Then, go back through what you typed out and … construct what I will call the Argument Identification Paragraph by: 2. (Parenthesize) the premise and conclusion indicators 3. [Bracket] all the statements … (This way I might see what you leave out, often students miss a statement or phrase that is important.) 4. Place Single *Asterisks* around any SubConclusions. 5. Place Double **Asterisks** around the Main Conclusion. Standardization of Argument (Steps 6 – 8) 6. Fill in any missing premises or conclusions. ∙ These only need to be added with the logical ordering of statements. These should be numbered as MP1, MP2, etc. Use MP for Missing Premises and MC for Missing Sub-Conclusions or Main Conclusion. 7. Make a Numbered List the statements in their Logical Order. ∙ Create a numbered list of the statements in the correct logical order “with the premises placed above the conclusions they are intended to support. State the main conclusion last.” (p. 182) ∙ Use this numbering for your parenthetical justifications (see below). Fall 2011 8. Add Parenthetical Justifications for each sub-conclusion & the main conclusion. Example: 3. …(sub-conclusion or main conclusion) …. (from 1, 2) ∙ These should correspond and be consistent with the sub-conclusions and conclusion you identified with asterisks* in your Argument Identification Paragraph. ∙ The Last Line of this list is your main conclusion and so should always have Parenthetical Justifications. ∙ Check that your Standardization against your Argument Identification Paragraph. ∙ Review the examples in the textbook on pp. 183-187 to get a full grasp of Parenthetical Justifications. ∙ And see the STANDARDIZATION EXAMPLE LECTURE PAGE. Example: 1. Premise 2. Premise 3. Sub-conclusion (from 1, 2) [*aka 1 + 2 🡪 3] 4. Premise 5. (MP) Missing Premise 6. Main Conclusion (from 3, 4, 5) It may help to understand Standardization in terms of what we know about Diagramming. The above Standardization is the same as the below Diagram of the argument: 1 + 2 ↓ 3 + 4 + 5 ↓ 6 ** Remember for the arguments for this assignment: ∙ Paraphrasing is not necessary. ∙ Include every statement in the argument in the standardization.
