CHEM 232 F22 – Lab Workshop for H-NMR and IR
H-NMR and IR are common spectroscopic tools to identify organic compounds and determine whether desired
chemical transformations were successful.
In this lab, please use the information in Chapter 13 of your textbook (or any other H-NMR resource) along
with the IR peak table under Files in Canvas to identify the important peaks in the following spectra. Please let
me know if there are questions, or if you have any trouble.
1. Please analyze the H-NMR spectrum for the starting material and product and IR spectrum for the
product from the Reduction of Vanillin Lab. If you weren’t able to get a spectrum of your own, let
me know and I’ll provide a copy for you to analyze.
2. Analyze the following H-NMR and IR spectra. Identify important peaks and then identify the
compound if you can, using all of the resources available to you. Each H-NMR/IR spectra pair
represents a single compound:
a)
b)
c)
d)
