Clinical Mental Health Counseling Degree

I intend to become an addiction’s counsellor after earning my Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degree. I chose the program after having firsthand experience on the effects of addiction. While doing my bachelor’s degree, I shared the same hostel with the brightest girl in our class. Unfortunately, she was abusing substances to manage to study for long hours, which she soon became addicted to and eventually dropped out of school. However, I managed to talk to her as we maintained our friendship even after school, to seek professional help. After several counseling meetings, she went back to school, and she will be graduating soon. The idea that smart students are dropping out of school globally due to addiction was my key motivation into taking this program. I hope to form part of the solution to this menace in society.

Experts in multicultural counselling and therapy have highlighted several challenges of cultural and racial minorities in relation to mainstream cultures. This area entails helping the minorities to cope with the stress that come as a result of being discriminated against by the dominant cultures in society (Nelson-Jones, 2002). For example, drug addicts are discriminated against in society. The community has failed to appreciate the efforts of former addicts who are rehabilitated. Consequently, these addicts get stressed and are likely to relapse and go on with their previous lives. As a future clinical health mental counsellor, I intend to enlighten the society on matters of addiction and how to help the victims fight back to their healthy lives. I hope to achieve this by organizing seminars and establishing campaigns aimed at teaching the society not discriminate against addicts and to learn to support them when they make efforts of changing.
