Comparison between Old Eugenics and Biotechnology

Eugenics is the practice of modifying the human genetic components with the aim of improving human species, by allowing people with desirable hereditary characteristics to mate. It was applied in the past to help reduce undesirable traits such as disabilities and diseases from society. Despite being popular in America, it was outlawed after being associated with the genocide of Nazi Germany. On the other hand, biotechnology is modern science in which parents, with scientific help, can improve the genetic constitution of their children and even choose the gender of their offspring (Faust, 281). It is, therefore, evident that even though science debunks eugenics, biotechnology still upholds its negative philosophies.

One significant similarity between eugenics and biotechnology is that both of them involve altering the genetic constitution of an individual. After World War 2, Hitler disabled and attempted to eliminate people who he considered weak in society. Even Darwin’s theory had proved that nature favors healthy and fit individuals, and eugenics promoted unethical and immoral behaviors. The practice spread beyond Germany and soon was practiced in other regions. In America, tens of thousands of individuals were sterilized due to eugenics. Today, eugenics is being practiced under the name in-vitro fertilization (IVF). Besides implantation, doctors perform a pre-implantation genetic diagnosis to check on the health of an embryo before it is implanted into the mother’s uterus.

Medical technology has improved the freedom of parents to determine the children’s traits in the quest for perfection. If the ultimate intention of biotechnology is to give rise to individuals with intellectual, artistic, or athletic features, then humanity is destroying itself. By mating only a few features, it is highly probable that in the future there will be an increase in genetic disorders. As a result, biotechnology would have destroyed humanity and would be no different from the eugenic science they avoided.

Any attempt to clone a human being is not only unethical but also poses a danger to human life, considering how unsafe the technique is and the possibility of causing harm to the parties involved in the course of the procedure. It is time the government and society takes a keen look into the crucial idea, should they prove that it is safe for both the mother and the offspring (George, 203).  A child who grows up to realize that he/she is a clone the parents and worst of all that the parents invested a substantial amount of money to get them cloned may develop a sense of hatred towards the parents.

Aside from safety, growing up knowing that you are the only person or among the few people in a society whose genetic identity was determined and live in advance prior to existence may make the child develop the feeling that they are less human. Moreover, some of the reasons given by experts for cloning include producing an offspring who is free from genetic disorders or diseases and giving the offspring a perfect genetic endowment (George 204). The principles, however, undermine the purpose of procreation and child-rearing. Child cloning degrades the aspect of acceptance, which is key to parenthood.

Legally, when a mother gives birth to a child, she has the right to own the child, regardless of the situation or harm that may occur. On the contrary, the act of willfully exposing a child to the grave danger of death, with the intent of giving the child a perfect genetic constitution is unforgivable should any harm occur to the child. Furthermore, the two parties have no rights over each other due to the lack of a direct relationship. My response is intuitive since despite living in the era of technology and the science-driven world, it is still wise to listen to instincts while making decisions, especially when the decision pertains to another life.
